NI riots: Adult influence in disorder 'amounts to child abuse'

The behaviour of some adults in contributing to the actions of young people during the recent street violence in Northern Ireland amounts to child abuse, NI's children's commissioner has said.
Koulla Yiasouma said those adults were engaged in "criminal exploitation" and "have to be held accountable".

David Allen Green on the Good Friday Agreement and why Johnson and his government can't simply wish it away.

We love foie gras’: French outrage at UK plan to ban imports of ‘cruel’ delicacy

Asked about the gavage, the most controversial aspect of foie gras production, where long tubes are pushed down the birds throat to pump food into the digestive system, causing the liver to swell to several times its natural size, Pé said campaigners were anthropomorphising – attributing human characteristics to animals – by claiming this harmed or hurt the ducks and geese.

From the desk of the Prime Minister of Saying Any Fucking Thing And Not Caring About Effects
I really don't know what else anyone expected.

Quite apart from his history of making stuff up about bendy bananas and £350 million a week, Johnson was fired by The Times for making up quotes (from an uncle of his, attributing to uncle some comment supposed made in his professional capacity, presumably on the grounds it's the sort of thing his uncle would have said had he thought to, and he wouldn't mind, and if he did he wouldn't complain to his nephew's editor about it, would he?) and then again by Michael Howard for lying to him about one of his affairs) so he did have rather a track record.

I hope that our two democracies survive these terrible democratic choices: Johnson and Trump. It certainly makes one wonder about the sanity of the conservative movements in our respective countries. It's one thing to choose a person for high office that is competent though liberal movements may disagree with his policies. It's an entirely different thing to elect an egoist who doesn't give a fuck about anything or anyone so long as he looks like he's being effective to the deluded idiots who voted for him.

I know I'm being redundant, but in the case of Northern Ireland vis a vis Brexit, the amount of lying and not facing actual facts that has been accomplished by Johnson dwarfs the accomplishments of Trump. To betray wholesale a peace agreement in such a way that horrible bloodshed will resume... Trump staged a failed coup, yes, but relatively few lives were lost and we still have our democracy for the moment. Johnson surfed the Brexit wave and cared for nothing but his ego, disregarding the awful misery he started again in N.I.

Joining the EU (was it under Wilson? MacMillan?) back when, set the seeds of peace in N.I. though they may not have known it then. Brexit has thrown gasoline on the still smoldering embers of those terrible times.

Well, except for that whole COVID thang that ended up with over 500,000 dead people in the US. Granted, some of them would have died anyway, because it's a pandemic, but Trump actively worked to make mask-wearing a political issue. I think you could safely say he was personally responsible for thousands, if not tens of thousands, of extra deaths due to his attempts to dismiss COVID's severity.

Johnson and his government are responsible for hundreds and thousands of unnecessary deaths, too, because of their repeated incompetence and responsibility last year.

Endangering the Peace Process is far, far worse. I'm almost weeping with both rage and sorrow even thinking about it.
