All private schools in the UK have charitable status only if they can prove that they do a certain amount for the local community including but not limited allowing their facilities to be used, take on scholarship or disadvantaged pupils as well as their core "customers". Their charitable status can be removed if they're not seen to be doing this!

Talking about Eton by the way - Jeremy Corbyn retweeted this little video by his supporters:

@Innula: the Tories turning back themselves won't happen, because most sane members either left or have been thrown out. As long as the ERG is part of it, it is never going to happen anyway.
Certainly the Conservative Party can't continue as an effective political party as presently constituted, and the authoritarian populist nationalists and the more traditional Conservatives, who simply believe in low taxes, limited but efficient government, the rule of law, good manners and a quite life, are going to split into two parties.

The only question, really, is who gets to keep the Conservative brand, assuming they want it, that is.

That's a fight that's going on before our eyes, and it can't be concluded one way or the other while they're in government.

These more traditional Tories still exist and aren't going to give up on politics altogether, or not all of them are; the question is whether they manage to regain ownership of the Conservative brand name, or go off and form some equivalent of Macron's En Marche! or what.

That's got implications all across the board, of course -- some LibDems are rightly concerned that Jo Swinton is proving uncomfortably welcoming towards Conservative rebels with pretty illiberal records on same sex marriage and austerity.

She's doing this for political reasons that I fully understand, since Labour Party members are well used to the idea that a party of government inevitably has to accommodate people who disagree with each other on very important issues, and it may well be that, when all the dust settles, we end up with very different LibDem and Labour Parties, too, and possibly even a new party or two on the centre- or far-left, but that's impossible to call at the moment -- the earth tremors have started and we don't know how long they'll last, how much damage will result from them, and what's going to emerge from the rubble at the end of it.

But certainly, the Conservatives can't continue in their present form and they can't sort themselves out while still in government and trying to cope with a no-deal Brexit -- my greatest nightmare is that they may try to, though.

It won't last more than a few months if they do, but God alone knows what monstrosities will be spawned in the process.

The Tanaiste is the Deputy PM.

ETA: Here's the Telegraph's Europe editor, Peter Foster, on why the proposals are too little, far too late:

So bojo wants 2 borders now? It sounds like he is going backwards. Especially since he wants a time limit, which he already knows is a nonstarter.

As mentioned before "Bojo" wants no deal!! He's deliberately chosen an option to obfuscate this intention! Stop pandering to any notion that he has any interest in this deal.

He may not want to make a deal but this is what he has said he wanted.

He's a fucking liar!! He doesn't say anything with any truth in it. Jeez. Stop QFT... it's not true!

Had HMG proposed something like this two years ago, it might have been the basis for some sort of deal.

However, at this stage, it's a complete non-starter, and Johnson must realise this, or at least have been told so by his negotiators and legal draughtsmen.

I suspect that one reason the EU27 aren't rejecting the proposals out of hand is that, if they did, it would mean there was little point in granting a further extension.

They might consider, therefore, that a reply on the lines of "these proposals, while interesting, are not acceptable as they stand and therefore require further discussion and negotiation, so we propose extending the deadline by a further year" would leave everyone's options open.

I don't think the Chief Constable of NI is very happy with the way things are going.

As he's just refused to put police on customs checkpoints. When you listen to anyone with experience back to the days of the troubles, it's clear that anyone and anything involved in border security has a target painted on it.

His position is understandable. But polite customs checking is the least of his worries. The bulk of border activity will be people trying to escape third-world conditions. Business and industry will fail. Violence will erupt. England will not have the means to offer support. Ireland won't be allowed to offer support. The Loyalists will find themselves loyal to thin air.

This is all "more of the same" and more of the inevitable fallout from hanging the "will of the people" tag on a woolly and muddled question.

That question was, of course, "remain or leave?"

Remain was clearly defined. Maintain the status quo. The folks voting for that were a united bloc.
The leave side, not so much.

About half of them wanted to leave the EU but be a part of the EEA. They voted leave, but they will not support a no-deal exit or a deal that doesn't at least maintain close ties and free trade.
About a quarter of them were old-fashioned nationalists and wanted no part of any of it. They voted leave. These are the "leave at all costs, even with no deal" bunch.
And a quarter wanted "something else" and voted leave in the futile hope of getting it

The vast majority of leave voters voted "leave" because they had an idea of how we were to leave, what terms were acceptable, and will not support leaving on other terms, most preferring remain over "leaving the wrong way". Now, you'd think that this doesn't make sense, that those who backed leave wanting no ties with the EU post-brexit would be prepared to compromise with the leavers who wanted to maintain tighter ties, taking the long view that so long we actually do leave they could work on severing those other ties down the road (personally I think they'd fail in that effort, but they would have their primary goal - brexit - achieved) but they won't do it. They all take the view of "You voted to leave and now you will leave MY way or to Hell with you."

Which leaves not two camps, remain or leave, but at least four.
Remain
Leave this way
Leave that way
Leave the other way

None of these four will support giving any of the others what they want, and none command a majority. However, the largest single group, by a substantial factor, is the remainers. And the politicians know it, would quite like to keep their jobs, but are aware that there is not a single option available to them that would be supported by a majority of the country.

Boris is history. Either in the immediate future or in the relatively near term. He's damaged goods and he's gone. Soon. However, no matter what terms brexit happens on, if it happens it is going to be a political disaster - and the leave side will therefore be trying to keep Boris around just long enough that when the wheels do come off he can be blamed and, being safely fired and off the stage, they hope that enough of the mud will stick to him that it doesn't splash too heavily on politicians who are trying to still have a career.

The Grimy Old Party in the US senate is probably thinking the same way about their orange Caligula.
