Weather in the splash zone is looking good for this evening.

USPS says my Artemis 2 mission patch should get here on Monday. A little late, but then I ordered it a little late. My Artie 1 patch is patiently waiting for it on the shelf. 😁

I had the same moment of fear watching it come down that I do watching a skydiver jump from a plane until their parachute opens. The capsule needs to be a glider...

The Integrity capsule is stable and SAR teams have surrounded it, but the crew is having some trouble establishing communication with the SAR teams via the dedicated radio and sat-phone (they can still talk with Houston just fine).

The SAR teams will have to wait between 15 minutes and 30 minutes for the crew to turn everything off and power down the capsule before they can approach and start taking the astronauts off, since the capsule does have some thrusters and things on its sides that you kinda don't want going off in your face.

I might've been holding my breath close to the end, heh.

All four crew members are now out of the capsule and waiting in the safety raft to be hoisted above the helicopters that will take them to the recovery command ship, where they'll receive comprehensive medical exams, but the word is that all four are in great shape. That's it - Artemis 2 is over. :)

Later the capsule itself will also be hauled aboard the ship so it too can come home and be examined. Not just the ship and its structure but also various used supplies, systems and other things will be analyzed. The trash needs to be taken out of course. And I'm sure they'll definitely want to see what the heck the problem was with that toilet. Remember that at least technically the Orion capsule is designed to be reusable; so assuming the Artemis program continues long enough we should get to see this ship recycled for a later mission.

Now it meets the legal requirements in the Big Beautiful Bill and can be displayed in Texas so they don't have to cut apart the shuttle to move it.

Maaaaaan

I understand it's done and over and everyone's kind of moving on, but if I could appeal to your attention just a little longer, I really really recommend watching the crew's post-mission panel event in Houston which happened earlier today. The clip above is from it, but I think the whole thing is worth watching if you didn't catch it live:

An amazing video of the Artemis II launch shot from one of NASA's Canberra reconnaissance jets. The first 4 minutes is a single pan shot of the SLS 8 seconds before take off until just a bit after they eject the Launch Abort System and become a true spacecraft.

The Canberra jet... is that the same aircraft that first went into use in the 50s? I remember my brother building a plastic model of one from a kit. This is the same one, or its many times improved sibling? Like the B-52 aircraft?

I don't know what model your brother built, but the American Canberra is licensed as the B-57 (Lockheed Martin) and has been flying since the 1950s, first as a bomber than for long-range reconnaissance. I once saw one in person at an Air Base show in Indiana. They are almost all wing, or at least seem so.

The modern ones have definitely seen upgrades for improvements in wing and engine designs. NASA has three of them under the designation WB-57F and primarily use them for weather "surveillance."
