In the immediate aftermath of the nuclear incident at Chernobyl the local wildlife was exposed to a great deal of ionizing radiation. Scientists studying the animal population have found that one species of tree frogs adapted rapidly to the change. The descendants of those frogs are more likely to have higher levels of melanin, and it appears that evolution can happen on an extremely rapid time scale:
