Florida is still reeling from the Miami condo collapse. Trump wants to hold a rally there anyway

Here are two truisms in American politics:

  • Former President Donald Trump cares about himself, and only himself, and any feint to the contrary is, in fact, strictly in the service of the above.
  • Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis cares about himself, and only himself, and any feint to the contrary is, in fact, strictly in the service of the above.
This week, that dynamic entered "unstoppable force, immovable object" territory, with a rare schism between DeSantis — fiercely jockeying to fill the former president's lifted loafers — and Trump, the de facto GOP kingmaker through whom all conservative political futures must flow.

According to Florida Republicans who spoke with the conservative Washington Examiner this week, DeSantis has "made a direct plea" to Trump, asking him to maybe just maybe think about perhaps holding off on the MAGA rally the former president has scheduled for this coming weekend in Sarasota, Florida, on account of the fact that his state is still absolutely reeling from the the Miami building collapse that has become one of the worst infrastructure disasters in the country's history.

Unsurprisingly, Trump — a man with a pathological craving for the semi-coherent adulation of a live crowd — has instead chosen to plow ahead with his upcoming rally, national tragedy be damned!

And finally, one small beam of light in an otherwise dark and grim episode. My guess would be that the cat jumped from the balcony. It was high enough that it could land safely below (counterintuitively, an increased height helps in survival rates because cats have times to twist and position themselves for a controlled landing).

It's bad enough that these people have lost their family members in this collapse. What is even worse? Hackers stealing their family members identities and stealing from their bank accounts. I really, really hope they catch and prosecute them.

We're still months away from final conclusions, but this a great summary of the most probable causes of the collapse.

How a collapsed pool deck could have caused a Florida condo building to fall

tl:dr - Models show how the collapse of the pool deck stressed vertical columns beyond their capacity. The cause of the pool deck collapse is still under investigation. There is considerable evidence of water damage, but some experts question whether that was sufficient to create the pool collapse or whether something else -- still hidden in the wreckage -- was responsible.

I feel for the families of the dead, but their obsession with finding bodily remains is verging on the irrational now.

Months after Surfside condo collapse, families plead: Search the rubble for remains one more time
Rubble from the site is now held at a lot 14 miles from the ruins of Champlain Towers South, near Miami International Airport. Investigators have separated it into portions considered to have evidentiary value, which are kept inside a warehouse, and parts that are viewed as having less significance and stand in a pile outside.

Not everyone is convinced that all the remains that could be recovered have indeed been found. Langesfeld said authorities told him they have searched the debris four times. He said that’s not enough, especially because he’s been told that upon every new search, even small bits of remains of those killed have been discovered.

Hasn't anyone ever wondered why the indigenous peoples of the US never lived directly on the coasts? They knew it wasn't a smart thing to do.
