I'd say that Senator Saunders is a populist who favours some left-wing causes, which is a movement with its own history on the American left.
Is he a member of any political party that represents populism? With what other populist organizations is his party affiliated?

I'm laughing because I know you know Sanders is an independent (definitely lowercase i) with no connection to a political party because no party exists to any great degree that fits his specific viewpoints. Or he likes being a loner. He aligns with the Democrats, usually when it suits him, because who else is he going to align with?

Like I said, Sanders calls himself a democratic socialist. I don't really know if he fits the mold for that particular political philosophy because I don't care. You seem to have a bee in your bonnet over it, and that's fine, but I don't think arguing over whether he's a democratic socialist or populist or whatever the opposite of these donks is is worth it. It rides a bit close to activities like evaluating real Scotsmen.

It matters because socialism and populism, even left-wing populism, are two very different things, based on two fundamentally different understandings of how society and the economy function, and of the role of the state.

I guess it doesn't really matter, but in the UK and the rest of Europe, where we do have strong socialist and social democratic parties, the difference between socialists and left populists is very real and, while the left populists over here wouldn't be very quick to claim him, his politics do have more in common with them than with the more traditional socialist parties.

Meanwhile, Sanders will continue to call himself a dem socialist,* he'll continue to push the political goals he has, and you'll stay on a low simmer.

* Fox News and lower will continue to call him a socialist, period.

Sure, and Americans will continue to refer to the game the NFL play as "football," but that doesn't mean it's much like the game of the same name played elsewhere.

Nevertheless, just as some people (rightly, to my mind) resist the contention from some of Sanders' supporters that there's no difference between Republicans and President Biden, I will continue to point out there's a big difference between democratic socialism, as the term is understood in most countries and Sen Sanders' platform.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a serious point.

Fascism, after WW1, was as attractive to disenchanted socialists like Mussolini, for example, or Oswald Moseley, as it was to disenchanted conservatives, and the Nazis drew heavily on people like Johann Plenge and Oswald Spengler.

More recently, we've seen some of the more excitable online Sandersistas seeming to develop an unexpected commonality of interests with their alt-right counterparts, which perhaps isn't all that surprising when you consider the C19th and early C20th US People's Party and their history.

I could attempt a detailed historical critique, but this is hardly the place for one, so I'll say only that, in my view, there are good reasons why, historically, leftist populism can turn very nasty indeed, since it tends to blame people's woes on conscious human agents (the rich, the 1%, the international, cosmopolitan neo-liberal elite) rather than impersonal economic forces, so, since liberal democracy seems pretty fragile in the US at the moment, I watch the US populist left with a degree of suspicion.

Serious point or not, you are arguing against the trees. You can spew out 100,000 words on the topic, here or anywhere, and A. Sanders will continue to call himself whatever he wants, B. the right will continue to call Sanders and whomever they like whatever they want, and C. the lunatics will continue with their management of the asylum.

Don't tell Jeremy Corbin (or isn't he socialist either ?)
Der Antisemitismus ist der Sozialismus der dummen Kerle

I'd say he's more of a leftist populist who, in 2016, was considering emulating Donald Trump, but, because he's a Brit rather than an American, he (and his supporters in Momentum) are populists within a strong socialist tradition, like Podemos and Syriza, which is why he's always been a member of the Labour Party, (until Kier Starmer intervened), which is affiliated to the Socialist International, and was for a while its leader.

If you're interested -- and there's no reason why you should be, of course -- there's a somewhat academic but still accessible critique of Corbynism here (pdf) that I found crystallised many of my reservations about Corbyn and his followers.
