    RIP the Metaverse

Did Second Life constantly refer to itself as a metaverse in the time between its opening and OpenSim's Hypergrid launch? Did the SL community talk, "Metaverse this, metaverse that," all the time WRT Second Life during that timespan? Mind you, OpenSim itself was launched in 2007. What's seen as...

    John Carmack is leaving Meta

There are several initiatives into this direction, I think. Funny how none of them seems to take into account what is already there, much less learn from it, because none of them even know what is already there. And they all see themselves as pioneers in something that has never been done...

    RIP the Metaverse

What I find hilarious is how everyone believes that Zuckerberg invented both the term "metaverse" and the concept of 3-D virtual worlds, but at least the use of the term "metaverse" for existing virtual worlds. The OpenSim community has probably spoken of a "metaverse" as early as 2008 when the...

That one guy who went past SL straight to OpenSim

    Thanks for the welcoming... welcoming!

    Mastodon

I remember the days when public Friendica nodes had to close their registration at fewer than 150 users. All that federation used up CPU resources like nobody's business. And the most popular nodes were those with Facebook federation where everyone and their dog mirrored their entire Facebook...

Great Canadian Grid is up - sort of

Guess I should go pick up the boxes I've only ever seen there before Roddie shuts the grid back down earlier than announced again.

That one guy who went past SL straight to OpenSim

Ah, Sheera Khan, former landlady of mine, so-to-speak. Yes, I started out on Metropolis. Oh, and yes, I was one of the over 30 who tried in vain to party into Metro's closure last year. That is, my new main was, replacing my old Metro avatar over the course of the party. There used to be three...

    Mastodon

At the risk of making everyone's worldviews crumble to dust: This is pretty much why I have at least 80% of my Hubzilla followers. They've learned this from me, and they follow me so I can teach them more about the Fediverse that they don't know. Let's forgo the blue pill that leaves you with...

Great Canadian Grid is up - sort of

I should have mentioned that the GCG shut down again in 2022 when Roddie said he'd leave OpenSim completely and retreat to Second Life. And OpenSimWorld lists a bunch of online sims, so yes, the grid is up and running.

    Add Mastodon links to profile?

If anything, don't make them Mastodon-specific. Instead, add a field for Fediverse IDs in general. For if you make it explicitly Mastodon-only, you'd exclude the users on lots of other projects which Mastodon still can and does connect to. It's a bit like back then when forums introduced...

Great Canadian Grid is up - sort of

By the way, the Great Canadian Grid is back yet again. Same start sim basically, same officially licensed Tim Horton's, and it looks like some interesting older sims have been revived.

    Mastodon

Where would posts about the Fediverse outside Mastodon go? Here (inb4 "We only want to talk about Mastodon here")? A separate thread for the respective project (leading to loads of tiny threads in the long run)? A separate thread for everything in the Fediverse that isn't Mastodon (>implying...

New content for the Opensim Library

I'd say building materials like concrete, bricks, wood or cobblestone are the most important because they're the most likely to actually be used. Maybe terrain if you can find/make something decent that doesn't repeat too obviously. But people still make their own prim houses or prim pavement. I...

That one guy who went past SL straight to OpenSim

You don't get new users often, or are they too lazy to introduce themselves? Anyways, here's someone who has been in OpenSim for three years and a month and... wait for it... never been in Second Life at all. No, really. (Insert We Exist meme here.) Yeah, I've been going on people's nerves by...
