Pretty much everyone I talk to.

I would agree to "common" instead of standard. But I had been using the damned things for a decade before I ever heard a hard g pronunciation.

I gotta wonder what’s more uncomfortable, rules or a throne made of swords. Then I realize, there’s prolly not that much difference between ‘em that way. Both of ‘em gonna cut ya up in uncomfortable places.

Some people have argued that it should be pronounced like the g as in graphics. As someone pointed out though, that would make one pronounce JPEG as JFEG since the P is for photograph.

Say gif, jif, and graph (hard g, soft g). Notice your throat and palate positions. Gr is neither a hard or soft g, it is not g+r. If they were concerned with pronunciation the file type shot have been grf.

Since they deliberately chose the name and acronym because they wanted to be able to say "choosy developers choose jif" to piggyback on Smucker's advertising campaign, I rather think they were.
