Can we get a cancel button on the "post reply" box?

If you decide not to post a reply then until the next time you post a reply you have your abandoned message sitting at the bottom of the forum, taunting you for your hesitation.

Can we get a "cancel" button next to "Post Reply" and "Preview"?

Go to the Floppy disk symbol and choose Delete Draft.
The next time the unposted text will not show.
It is in the row of symbols at the top of the message editor.

Ah, I have to turn off the "toggle BB code" gear symbol.

No, it doesn't work. It's saved as a draft, which can be cleared by the procedure Sid described once I turn "toggle BB code" off.

I cannot figure out how to delete a draft on the mobile version of the site. The option exists in the PC interface but not the mobile one. BBcode is off and all the other buttons are here.

There is no mobile version of the site, the pages are just responsive - you have to turn on bbcode with the gear icon - that enables the entire toolbar.

I've just been deleting it all and inserting a single dot to clear the draft on mobile.

Mystery solved - there are separate toolbar configurations for different screen sizes - the draft button was not in the smallest size. I adjusted it:
