I spent about 20 minutes typing out a reply to each quote notification and my phone died and I lost the post. Now I have to do it over so please excuse the sloppy formatting this website is very laggy on my phone.

I’m also going to edit, add to, and reformat this posts in the next 15 minutes or so, I know that’s bad form but sorry but I get the words out there and then realize how badly it reads.

So to the question of ‘Is it a furry thing?’ Maybe but I don’t usually have much in common with furries. Not a fan of RP. Most of my friends are not furries. It’s an age thing though. Everyone I interact with on SL and Discord are 18 to 32 with most being around 22 to 26.

Larger voices groups split off into smaller groups of about 5 to 7. This requires physical distancing which also lets the builds feel more alive instead of the entire population being in one part of the sim.

None of my friends use IRC and most wouldn’t know what it is. It’s a dumb luck I even know what’s it is. I’ve used it maybe 3 times over 12 years ago.

And yes I almost never look at local chat. Yes it’s probably very rude. But it’s just not why I’m there.

“I have a question, and I hate asking this one, but I think it is necessary for context. Are those communities you're a part of/the people you know, heavy with the "Autistic-spectrum furry" demographic?”

That’s an oddly specific question. My oddly specific answer is no. I don’t know many furries. As for autism, I wouldn’t have a clue. But maybe a few of them. Not the ones I mainly talk to. Nothing against autism but it’s hard for me to relate to and interact with people with difficulties. At least those my age. I know a guy in his 50’s with autism and he’s basically a internet father figure to me. A true sage.

“Question, what are your fingers busy doing? Coding? WASDing in some game?”

Yes. Or just surfing the internet, viewing people’s links or copying links to post in local chat. But usually scripting. That’s what keeps be coming back even after VRChat. That and talking to and checking in with and keeping in touch with the people who are still only in SL.

Random aside: it took about half an hour to read, reply, spellcheck and format this exchange. It would have all taken 3 minutes tops on voice.

(Oh and whoops, as of exactly today, my SL account is exactly 12 years old. Joined May 1 2007)

Moved this together so I could reply to this part specifically. You're responding...on a PHONE? You're making my head explode again. While I often DO browse VVO on a 10" tablet with an HD screen (landscape mode so it's like using a real screen), I rarely respond or post that way unless it's a VERY short post or response. If I wanted to do a fuller or longer response, out would come the bluetooth keyboard (with a slot to put the tablet in, logitech K480: Logitech K480 Multi-Device Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard ), or I'd wait to login on the computer so I could use a real keyboard. I don't consider phones suitable for anything other than the most basic of "emergency browsing", the screens are too small. I don't even like texting on phones because the screens are so small and the virtual keyboard is so cramped. Heck, even on the PS2/PS3/PS4 if I was to type more than a little bit of text, I'd plug in a keyboard. (I even have my keyboard and mouse connected to a KVM switch attached to the PC and PS4)

It’s an age thing though. Everyone I interact with on SL and Discord are 18 to 32 with most being around 22 to 26.
I figured as much, especially since you responded on a PHONE! (head explodes again) Millenials! ;-)

I'm curious, what happens when there ARE larger groups, at an event or something?

None of my friends use IRC and most wouldn’t know what it is. It’s a dumb luck I even know what’s it is.
Sic Transit Gloria Mundi. I was a latecomer to IRC, 1999.

And yes I almost never look at local chat. Yes it’s probably very rude.
I'm not sure I'd call it "rude" except in specific circumstances. Could it be problematic in many circumstances..yes, IMHO. Of course Ignoring people who are using voice could also be rude in certain circumstances, it's why I have it enabled even when I don't generally use it.

That’s an oddly specific question. My oddly specific answer is no.
Yes, it was oddly specific. And I did hate asking it, but from my own personal experience in SL, being a full-time furry (or using another non-human avatar full-time) correlates often with being on the autistic spectrum.

Thanks for responding, Adeon. While your phone using nature make my head explode, I am finding your viewpoints very interesting and informative.

Haha. I don’t remember how many posts I had on SLUniverse but 100% of them, there and here, were typed on my phone.

Internet forums and email are phone things to me. I never check either of them at home on my computer. Computers are gaming and discord chat and other forums of instant messaging to me.

Interesting to think about. Never noticed it until now.

I can multitask on the computer and text in SL/Discord/Facebook/whatever at the same time, the main trick is multiple monitors. I'll be in SL, watching anime, reading forums, and faffing about in Gimp. It helped a lot to force W10 to use the classic alt-tab instead of the "Fuck with your focus" new one.

People did tend to get ignored for a bit in-world when I was building/scripting because too many things would be in the way of the chat windows, but I could always pause for a bit and scroll back up. I do have a few of my own issues, so trying to have a voice conversation while working on things would just be a distracting annoyance.

Ha ha back in the days when I used to build things in public areas I would hide my avatar (in a specially built box if necessary) while I put together prims or whatever. It was just too distracting to have male avatars asking for sex every couple of minutes.

Griefers seemed to never have clued to the various flight tools. I had a flying carpet that was my changing room and initial build platform.

I think most weird in this thread is that people like speaking to people. I mean, come on!? People are awful! Why not dogs!?

*coughs*

I still think it all comes down to processing and maybe some sort of special power where you can interact with folks for longer time. Most I do know have a certain threshold and usually it is 2 hours of peopling a day whilst mine is 2 hours every week. I also cannot imagine few screens as one is already distracting ... adding more voice calls would cause me to go i to some sort of brain overload coma.

Also I do know why people prefer Discord to IRC - it is simply more accessible and much more readable. Sure, plenty cool IRC clients (I liked Mozilla one oddly ... as it had xml themes) but you cannot manage it in a way you would forum with all user groups and channels. You can do so on a server but not a room on it.

This would have been impossible on voice. Keeping track of the discussion without being able to review what I'd already said? Not happening. I'm 100% certain that if you'd made this response in voice it would be way less coherent and full of rambling and missed points and contradictions.

(Meta = talking about SL within SL: viewer development, scripting, texturing, modeling, technical support, bugs, new features, avatar modding; the kind of discussion that’s zero fun for an immersionist)
Oh is that what it's called. FWIW, I tried RP in SL once or twice but it felt awkward. The rest of the time it's been talking about things (including SL) in SL. And talking did sometimes include voice (depending on the others)

Ah IRC and Usenet. Social media before it was called that.
I spent way too much time on IRC.

Now what I'd like to know, how do you make such long posts on such a small device as a phone... or is it more a phablet?

It’s an ancient original iPhone 6 (no S/C). I type with two thumbs.

I’m actually shocked that people are so curious about this?

in my case I’m kind of fascinated that so many people here seem to use IRC. Outside of this website, literally nobody I know has used it, if they even know what it is.

I was going to say I considered it a dead chat medium, like Skype. Except that I’m fully well aware IRC has a ton of users they are just nobody I know.

If it helps . . . I never really used IRC.

Usenet was my playground.

If it helps a bit more: WTF is IRC?
And yup, Usenet (the Dutch chunk of it) was my home too.

I used it back in that ancient past of earlier times which a few of us more historical types came from.

It's just that I find writing anything more than a sentence or two on a phone to be a pain due to having to have the keyboard big enough to not fat-finger all the time while still having enough screen space for the text. I know there's also the old-style keying from the number pad but that used to give me trouble too.
click-click-lick oops, too far click-click-click-click, next letter

I haven't used IRC since the late ninties and usenet since the mid noughties. Mostly because late-comers were using other communications. ;)
If Skype is a dead chat medium now, will Discord be dead in a decade too? Time will tell.

In addition to IRC, I recall AIM, ICQ and there was something else that used to be common.
