Two U.S. military planes were shot down in separate incidents on Friday, escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict. One fighter jet was shot down in Iran.

I was reading an article just now about Trump's speech earlier this week, in which he apparently said

Never in the history of warfare has an enemy suffered such clear and devastating large-scale losses in a matter of weeks.

I'm not sure what metric he's using other than he wished it to be so, but it occurs to me that Joseph Goebbels might, quite accurately, have said pretty much the same thing a few weeks into Operation Barbarossa, during the initial stages of which the Soviet resistance pretty much collapsed.

That's not, of course, how it all ended.

I'm not sure 'metric' should be used to describe his method of appraisement. But whatever his yardstick is, it's obviously detailed with a Sharpie.

So far today an F-15 and an A-10 were shot down over Iran. The UH-60 rescue helicopter reported on earlier was damaged but made it back safely to friendly territory in Iraq.

I never thought I'd see "friendly" and "Iraq" in the same sentence. But, I guess "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and all that.

I had heard about two more aircraft being shot, including the Black Hawk, but I'm having trouble finding much news about them.

Yup.

More specifically, the A-10 was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian fire, and the pilot ejected and landed In Kuwait. The F-15 was shot down over Iran proper, and its pilot was rescued but as far as I know there's not been any word about whether the second crewman, the weapons officer, was found or recovered. The helicopter that was damaged was part of the rescue operation that searched for the F-15 crew.

I saw for a while a rumor that a third jet was shot down, but nothing came of that. There was a picture of some wreckage that was supposedly of that third jet but the wreckage was way too small to be any kind of jet, it was probably a missile or something.

I don't know how widely reported it is in the US, but in Europe, and certainly in the UK, one of the main concerns about Trump's war on Iran is that it's an illegal war of aggression and that the US is publicly threatening actions that are clearly war crimes as defined by the various Geneva Conventions (in particularly, orders to give no quarter, and bombing civilian targets and infrastructure primarily in order to destroy civilian morale).
