I suspect they don't, but maybe by putting the question to him directly like this they can force him to publicly choose a position, which makes the next steps easier.
It is doubtful. Someone "worth" hundreds-of-billion dollars, "earning" tens-of-million" dollars a day, pushes buttons on a whim and watches people, institutions, the world burn. They are modern aristocracy with no concept of economic collapse. They are too big to fail. He may respond if it amuses him for a moment to do so.

And they honestly expect Bezos to give a damn?
I've never worked as a journalist but know some people who've tried to break into the business. I get the impression that major papers are flooded with applicants that are reasonably "qualified." This is actually really bad since it gives a lot of the power to the corporate oligarchs who own the established papers and networks. I bet Bezos could replace all the disgruntled journalists with desperate new applicants pretty fast and he knows it. I think American Media has been shifting to the right on social and especially economic issues already and it's set to go a whole lot further.

Though the occasional hire straight from journalism schools could happen, "major" newspapers have relied on a large pool of existing writers and editors both reasonably and extremely well qualified, garnered from numerous competing periodicals. In this was they staff newsrooms with an already trained journalists, along with a few star reporters who might bring in awards or other accolades. But the newspaper industry has been dying over the last several decades, and that pool has become pretty shallow. Also, print reporting has turned more to talent-driven journalism, where the focus is on personality and name-recognition, rather than skills and experience - and those types of hires cost more. The ideal of the beat reporter is dead.

tl;dr version: George Lakoff (famous linguist) recommends a sandwich technique. Lead with the truth, then the falsehood but don't draw too much attention to it, then end with the truth. People are more apt to remember the start and end of a written piece. Don't lead with something that reinforces the lie, such as "The New Trump Math: Is 2+2 really 5?" or "No, Vice President Vance does NOT keep his wife barefoot and chained to the kitchen."
