This article just told me how we can win the election by discrediting him.

His animus is the establishment. He is the "heroic" figure flaunting laws, giving it to the man, working "for" the "forgotten people". But we all know he is a grifter. It is one thing to grift banks, the government, media elites, "the liberals". It is quite another to grift the average person just trying to get by.

How many average Joes has he robbed? Let's bring out Trump University's "teachers" who did no such thing, bring out the people who "hooked" ordinary people into real estate that went bust, bring out the veterans he raised money for but kept everything. Bring out prosecution witnesses, the attorneys, who are trying to get people's money back from him, the "man of the people".

It's a damn sight easier than fixing the systemic issues that are robbing people. *sighs*

It's worth mentioning there are very different tiers of Trump supporters that have different reasons for voting for him. This article mostly addresses his core cult members who are often working class and weren't always republicans before Trump. Trump's cult is an important voting block but wouldn't be nearly enough to get elected in the general election alone. I can think of a few other important groups of Trump voters who don't really fit the description:

1) Lifelong republicans who aren't always fans of everything Trump did but would vote for anything that's not a dumb-o-crat. Many of them overlap with the cult members a bit but many really don't. Many favored other people in the primary but are mostly okay with Trump winning. This is most of the Trump supporters I know personally. Some people I know in this group will be pissed if Trump wins then hands Ukraine over to Russia.

2) Low information voters who don't really pay attention to politics but remember that the early Trump Presidency was a good economy and they (wrongly) give him credit. Many of these people don't know and don't care to know about all the complicated details or about Trump's worse behaviors. This also includes a few Trump supporters I know and know of. Some in this group aren't comfortable with Trump's behavior or race baiting but see it as a minor sacrifice for a strong leader.

3) Contrarians/trolls/lunatics. This includes a lot of miscellaneous nutjobs who aren't necessarily conservatives at all (some are actually quite left) but broadly speaking they just can't believe what everyone else knows. This includes anything from conspiracy nuts, to "wellness gurus" and all sorts of things. For some reason Trump is a magnet for these people in much the same way Ron Paul was a while ago. The article's theories somewhat explains that too. A lot of people in this group have no real coherent political beliefs but like the "feel" of Trump burning down the establishment.

Oh no, don’t get me wrong. It doesn’t need to be retyped or refought , so little is different and you hit all the points first time around. I felt it useful to point to the 2020 pattern as a reminder of what a bad faith provocateur looks like.

I think there are two reasons why "wellness gurus" tend towards MAGA.

The first is that many of the wellness gurus' underlying assumptions -- that traditional and spiritual wisdom about health care are preferable to modern, scientific and "unnatural" methods, for example, and that health and wellness are fundamentally the individual's responsibility rather than matters for the wider society -- are at root pretty right-wing.

The second is that, because of the way social media algorithms work, a wellness influencer who starts off sharing her perfectly neutral observations about diet and exercise will find, the first time she mentions any misgivings she may have about vaccines, or the effect of lockdowns on her children's development, that her engagement rapidly shoots up, and will also find that, the more she leans into these topics, the more her audience grows and changes. At this point, it becomes a commercial decision -- the more she covers topics that attract this particular constituency, the more valuable her advertising space becomes and the more anxious people are that she promote their products.

It's no accident that people like Alex Jones sell "alternative" remedies and supplements of all sorts. They know their audience and market very well.
