I wouldn't put Tulsi in the "military worship" camp. She is firmly against dumb regime-change wars, and is one of the few people in Washington with the temerity to take that position. That is one of her strengths, and it weighs very heavily in my opinion.

She certainly has her merits and good points. But i think she serves us better as a member of Congress than she would in the Oval Office, simply because she can build influence and sway votes.

She claimed to be against the Iraq war from the start, while also cheerfully volunteering to go fight it twice. I'd say I'm about 90% confident she knows better now, but as Beebo said, she has given us reason to have a shadow of doubt.

Never gave her much thought before this thread, so I can't say my opinion of her has gone down. But it ain't getting any higher.

Adam Kinzinger, a Republican congressman from Illinois, was among few lawmakers to immediately condemn Gabbard’s actions.

“It is sad and a shame and a disgrace,” Kinzinger told reporters at a Republican policy retreat in Philadelphia. “In no way should any member of Congress, should any government official, ever travel to meet with a guy that has killed 500,000 people and 50,000 children.”

Kinzinger called on leadership in both parties to condemn Gabbard’s trip and questioned how it was financed. But Kinzinger – like Gabbard, an Iraq war veteran – said he would need to know more to file an ethics complaint against his colleague.

“She has the audacity to say that everywhere she went people supported Assad,” Kinzinger said. “Of course, when you have an Assad-led tour, he’s only going to take you to places where people like him”.

Evan McMullin, a former independent candidate for president in the 2016 presidential election, asked on Twitter: “Why are so many of our leaders becoming stooges of foreign dictators and war criminals? @TulsiGabbard @realDonaldTrump This is America!”

Not excusing her actions at all, but I read that, and the first thing that popped in my mind was that Republicans are condemning her for that, and yet had no issue whatsoever with Trump's oh-so-cozy meetings with Kin Jong Un? Talk about hypocritical!

I am okay with her meeting Assad. Just meeting him does not mean that she is a supporter of his policies. She has referred to him as a brutal dictator. Her interest is peace and ending these seemingly interminable wars that continue to cost us trillions of dollars, and reducing the suffering of the people. But let's remember: a large chunk of the rebels trying to take Assad down are ISIS fighters. We came in on multiple sides of this war. The enemy of my enemy is my friend logic utterly fails here, and arming seemingly less-objectionable ISIS rebels is just as bad as killing them, as it helps Assad, using that logic. We Americans are amazingly ignorant of the contours of that conflict and we have no business being there. Another regime change in Syria will do what? Give ISIS an opening, most likely. One of those rebel groups may take power and then what? They turn and bite the hand that fed them weapons. Ridiculous! We need to be out of there, we have no business being there. We have to find a way to get out with as little harm as possible to the Kurds, but that is not an excuse to stay forever.

Did she say she wanting to fight in Iraq or that she wanted to serve in the military? No idea here, but wanting to serve your country says nothing about your beliefs about a given war.

I had a strong emotional reaction to this little gem of a Draft Beto video
But then these days I seem to have a strong emotional reaction to anything/ anyone positive and hopeful.

Anyway, while Kamala or Elizabeth would probably be my first pick, I think Beto’s charisma would make him a good addition to the ticket.

Track down some vids from the Bernie and HRC campaigns for some real tear jerkers.

For some real bawling remember there are universes where both won.

Well, we can shift KH into the Declared column now. ^_^

Sen. Kamala Harris Announces 2020 Presidential Candidacy

California Sen. Kamala Harris is running for president in 2020. The first-term Democratic senator made the announcement on ABC's Good Morning America Monday morning. The 54-year-old Harris has been seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party even before she won a Senate seat in 2016. She received national attention as San Francisco District Attorney before being elected California Attorney General in 2010.

Her campaign is highlighting that career, citing her experience on issues like sexual assault, housing and college affordability. Some of her proposals include middle class tax cuts, rent relief, immigration and criminal justice overhauls, and Medicare for all.
Can't say I'm impressed by the notion of any more tax cuts except at the bottom end, but I suppose it'll sell well. I'd just like to see some real change in areas like renting - as long as there's a profit motive behind people having somewhere to live (not exactly a discretionary expense), rents will always be as high as possible. At least rent control can help somewhat with that, providing loopholes like driving people out with prolonged "repair" work (a Trump family favorite) are curbed.

Anyway, we'll find out more about her current plans in the months ahead. I dare say she won't be as radical as I'd prefer, but she's certainly a welcome addition to the selection of candidates.

Hm.

Kamala Harris’s Political Memoir Is an Uneasy Fit for the Digital Era

Under District Attorney Kamala Harris, the overall felony-conviction rate in San Francisco rose from 52 percent in 2003 to 67 percent in 2006, the highest seen in a decade. Many of the convictions accounting for that increase stemmed from drug-related prosecutions, which also soared, from 56 percent in 2003 to 74 percent in 2006. As California’s attorney general, Harris pushed a punitive initiative that treated truancy among elementary schoolers as a crime for which parents could be jailed. In 2014, she attempted to block the release of nonviolent second-strike offenders from overcrowded state prisons on the grounds that their paroling would result in prisons losing an important labor pool.

The following year, she defended the California state prosecutor Robert Murray after he falsified a defendant’s confession that was used to threaten a sentence of life in prison, and sided with state prison leaders in contesting a transgender inmate’s bid for gender-confirmation surgery. Twice in 2016, she brought criminal charges related to human trafficking against Backpage.com, an online classified website frequently used by sex workers, and later, as a senator, she co-sponsored federalbills that led to the site’s seizure, a move that sex workers and activists said threatens their survival.

Pending any truly startling revelations (which I have not yet seen), I'm very pro-Kamala already. It's early, but I've wanted her to run for a long time.

Nobody is justified in criticizing a WoC's civil rights record working as a prosecutor in system designed against PoC.
I've never seen KH promote lower taxes for the wealthy.
She's on record supporting M4A and justice reform. 2017-2018 congressional voting record lists hers as the MOST progressive, followed in order by Warren, Booker, and Sanders.

There's no reason to see her inferior to anyone.

Outright radical IS a good reason for rejection. Seriously, if all you want is someone to stir up shit in the party, GTFO.

No one is going to skate through this primary. The candidates, ALL OF THEM, are going to get their records looked at with greater scrutiny. People are going to decide what they can and can't live with. In the meanwhile, let's not try to start shutting people down for actually vetting these candidates. Republicans are not going to go easy on them, they need thicker skin if they can't handle scrutiny of their records.

Nobody ever skates.
Don't pretend they do, and don,t try to disguise your hit jobs as vetting.

Christ, even I wouldn't have called Beto the most progressive, but calling him the fossil fuel candidate when his overall environmental record has been impressive, in a disingenuous analysis that included votes inside of committees along with actual legislation, the vary day after he speculated running was a hit job.
