More of them, too, if you're looking at organised denominations, I think,

We've had the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse running in the UK since 2015.

This is their latest report, published last month

It's maybe different in the US, but I doubt it.
Is just that I thought that right -wing and/or white supremacist groups would latch onto stories about abuse thing on in any religion considered "not us" especially if it's people they deem subhuman.
They jump on the tiniest perceived misstep by those they hate politically.
It's tragic wherever it's happening.

It's gone on, and people have always known it's gone on, in boarding schools, and church groups and children's homes, or at least in the UK they have. That "joke" of Milo Yanowhatshisname that got him into so much trouble? He stole that from the novelist Simon Raven about his days at Eton in the 1950s or 60s (I think that must have been the time) -- I remember hearing Raven tell it during a radio interview once.

Just as things have changed a lot over the last few years with BLM and MeToo, official awareness of, and attitudes to, child sexual abuse have changed massively over the last 30 or so years.

The big legal change here was the Sexual Offences Act 2003, before which Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper, always the scourge of paedophiles, had happily published topless photos of Samantha Fox the day she passed her 16th birthday, for the delectation of its mass market readership on the bus or tube into work, but the changes in attitudes that brought that about began in the 1980s, I think, or that's when the media suddenly became aware of the issue.

Then, of course, Jimmy Saville died in 2011, and in the aftermath of that, the Independent Inquiry was set up to, and it's now confirming what everyone always knew was going on, though possibly not the actual extent.

I've heard horror stories about the Ultra/Orthodox Jewish communities, and a quick Google search turned up dozens of links to articles detailing the sexual abuse.

People in authority (in our culture, overwhelmingly men) who are given special status and little supervision, almost inevitably abuse that authority. Because they can.

OK, you've made your point. I never said Jews were above reproach (of course, the Haredi/Ultra Orthodox don't think of Reform as real Jews, so I'd be tempted to return the favor if I was religious).
I said the cases I'd seen in the news were almost always Catholic, and I wondered why there seemed to be more of those than all other faiths
/me backs quietly out off the thread and closes the door,

Some of the priests get a lot of do-overs.
The report made a “minimum estimate” of between 2,900 and 3,200 sexual abusers of children who operated in the French catholic church since 1950
So (216000/3000) = 70 kids per priest.

What would that add up to be? 1 kid for every 8 priests? (o_O)
Who knows how many priests there were over that whole time period but there were 7000 priests in France in 2012.

The horrors that occurred within the residential schools are still being revealed even after six years from when the truth and reconciliation commission published their final reports:

He can go f*ck himself with a pineapple - I'm so tired of the painful reminders that I -can't- have kids, don't have enough to afford to adopt [and well, be 55 this year, not exactly fair to a kid at this point], and don't have random people asking me to raise their kids, or any real contact with my neices and nephews [and twhat I do have is with adult ones with their own kids].

Meanwhile, my pets keep me sane. And if I did have kids, I'd still have pets.

What is selfish is the way humans are destroying the environment pets were domesticated from, with food becoming more scarce, whole forests wiped out, hundreds of species going extinct daily (google it), and a human population that is growing and spreading so fast the environment can't compensate.

Over-hunting, deforestation and over-population are well-worn routes to societal collapse. Now, Hal Whitehead of Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and Pete Richerson of the University of California, Davis, have modelled how different learning strategies fare in different environments. They found that conformist social learning — imitating and emulating what the majority are doing — may also cause the demise of societies. When environments remain stable for long periods, behaviour can become disconnected from environmental demands, so that when change does come, the effects are catastrophic1.

Don't forget that the pope is catholic and as ultimate leader of the gang he has to defend the catholic values and traditions.
You can't expect him to say things like "Don't forget your joints and your condoms when you go to that all nude chicks orgy in Pattaya next weekend".
Worship, family and having (lots of) kids are key values in catholic live style.
Not my ideas, but that's how it is.

So, after yet more thinking about it, the problem I have with religion is it always seems to be about old [white] dudes telling others to do the very things they aren't.

And if its not selfish to pursue a religious calling, then its not selfish to go 'I'd be a rubbish parent' and just not be a parent.

Then again, I blame the Church for my mom never even considering dating after my dad died - because you should also only get married to have children.

The real selfishness here is the Church telling anyone else what to do when they don't do it themselves. Or, you know, hypocrisy.

I normally don't do religion discussions in forums, but well, okay for once then:
Here is my take.

All churches are man made, not only the christian ones.
If there is a god or a godly power, it is a silent and undemanding one. Otherwise they would break in at every single TV station in the world if they had to say something or demand something. A power that created the world. an universe, could easily leave a message in the sky. If they wanted something from us, they would be visible and demanding, not talking trough a few ancient books and old clergyman. Not allowing different religions.

And because churches are man made, founded and evolved possibly as a search to find god, they became houses of power for their leaders. And because of the male dominance (certainly in the past) they have male leaders.
Churches abuse their positions over and over again trough history, with wars, oppression, exploitation, abuse, murder.
Thankfully most people in the western world are able in the current times to free themselves from the vessels of the churches. Not so much in the Muslim world.

By the way there is a christian church with a powerful old female white woman in charge: The church of England: Queen Elizabeth II.
