It doesn't matter that Trump's defense team was utter crap. He could have simply told them to read "Green Eggs and Ham" as his defense. Republicans are cowards and will never vote to convict because that would mean they would have to admit their own guilt.
Absolutely right. Trump's guilt is understood by anybody who paid attention and knows anything about the law, but that doesn't mean shit. I believe what I heard about how he might get convicted if they did a secret ballot... real damn shame they can't.... I'd rather have the conviction with the cowards than no conviction. But he's 100% protected by his cult of personality, not by any legal defense.

For the senators riveted to their seats, forced to relive the nightmarish quality of that day, there was something especially spooky about watching the mob rampaging through the very building where they were sitting, smashing windows, crushing police officers in doors, waving far-right regalia and chanting “Fight for Trump!”

For Republicans, it must have been uniquely stomach-churning to see what their champion had unleashed – knowing that most of them will continue to defend them during this trial for fear of angering his “base”. Never can they have been so relieved to have been wearing masks that concealed their expressions from the press gallery.

McConnell has public stated Trump’s guilt clearly and angrily and on multiple occasions the past few weeks. Yet he voted against continuing the trial. There is no rational way to relate to someone with no morals whatsoever.

He’ll likely claim that he’s trying to preserve the party or the sanctity of the executive branch or some such thing. I don’t cotton to the idea of blackmail material in Trump’s secret wall safe. But one does have to wonder.

Okay, so, I think the no votes were between two camps.

One doesn't want it to continue because their own involvement will come out.

One is trying to desperately keep their party alive, as its dying. Anything that keeps it together....

But I think that a few of those no voters will vote to convict.

Shelby -just- announced he's not running again, for example.

Everything that I've been reading about McConnell from those in the know, as in Kentucky, state that this is an extremely common ploy for him; to play the middle, ride the fence so as to appear rational and neutral, but when push comes to shove he votes in ways that always support everything that is wrong with our system.

I personally think that he was saying all of that about the insurrection to appear reasonable to get everyone to go along with putting the Senate portion off until after Trump was gone, then spring us with the, "We cannot convict a man who isn't president anymore" line.

Every day I somehow manage, through some sort of magic, to summon the energy to work up yet more rage at all but a handful of Republicans.

And every day I marvel that millions are in love with the most disgusting piece of human garbage who ever lived.

ETA I love the Dems SO MUCH.

I really really wish that Maggots could understand: Failure to convict shows the world we're rejecting being great.

We're putting one unworthy shitbag above our rule of law, above our constitution, above our dignity and ideals.

We'll never be seen as great again after this. No matter how mighty our military may be, we'll be as unwelcome and as unrespected as a glob of fragrant dog-shit wedged into the tread of a shoe.

We need to show the world that our nation is better than any one person. No matter who that person may be... or we're done.

I only disagree, because I saw just how angry Romney was on the 6th [and continues to be], and the fact that he'd be one of the ones hung, because he wasn't loyal enough. Not to mention, he is part of the bipartisan crowd right now.

For that matter, I'm not sure any of the ones who weren't 110% loyal would have made it. And even the ones who were/are, might not have made it to be hung, because the mob, while apparently sufferers of affluenza, didn't strike me as all that self-possessed enough not to kill first and ask questions later.

Ok, so, I kind of avoided digging too deep into riot coverage, mostly for stress reasons. But C-span is showing a montage at the moment, as part of the trial coverage, and holy fuck these people are like 1000 times worse than I had assumed, and I assumed they were pretty bad.

I know it's kind of a late to the party moment, but seriously, every person at this even needs to be jailed for treason and insurrection, including their leader Trump. What a bunch of fucking violent assholes.
