Dearest Youtube recommends,

I very much enjoyed the video of a violinist covering Mitski's song Geyser. I've watched it before, and I'll probably want to watch it again at some point.

What I don't want is to watch every mother-fucking violinist who's recorded a video of themselves playing - on their violin - every Mitski song in existence. In fact, I think I'm done with violin covers. For a while, at least.

Peace out,
Free

I went into a few day phase quite some time ago where I wanted to hear the sound of window fans to lul me to sleep. For weeks after all I got from youtube recommendations was a bunch of fan noises.

YouTube history used to be like the main thing that drove your recommends but...these days I don't know anymore. Less than half of the videos on the home page seem to be related to anything I've watched before.

It does for recommends based on very recent activity. It's why I've sometimes gone in and deleted viewings from it, to cut down on stuff like the Mitski violin covers (or odder watchings...).

So my youtube channel was *removed* today due to, according to their email, their "spam, deceptive practices and scams" content policy.

Once I learned of the ban I submitted an appeal, and it looks like things are (temporarily?) back on for me as I can log into youtube and have access to most things I usually do - except for some of my playlists which includes an ongoing list of "video 45s" and one for music covers, which are important things to me. I don't know if those have been permanently deleted.

In any case, I'm not sure how I've violated their "spam, deceptive practices and scams" content policy, considering I don't have any videos on youtube. An absolute zero amount of videos of my own exist on the service. In or out of my regular account. Beyond some kind of weird activity in my playlists I can't explain (they're playlists...of other youtube videos...), or complaints towards one or more of my extremely occasional comments, where I post a thanks or appreciation or the rare paragraph of pure love (trolling in video comments is boring), I don't see how I've violated their CONTENT policy.

youtube has responded to my appeal!

Hi Free,

We’re pleased to let you know that we’ve recently reviewed your YouTube account, and after taking another look, we can confirm that it is not in violation of our Terms of Service. We have lifted the suspension of your account, and it is once again active and operational.
They note "Our goal is to make sure content doesn't violate our Community Guidelines so that YouTube can be a safe place for all - and sometimes we make mistakes trying to get it right."

I'm wondering if that "sometimes" might actually be often. After all, I don't have any content that could be considered worthy of a ban. And yet!

At least my playlists have been returned intact, so no damage done. Beyond a few hours of consternation. A normal part of life, right?

I keep my play lists private. I cut down on comments because idiots reported me for harassment for one comment. YT AI apparently can't count. One idiot tried telling me I am not Lakota without knowing anything about me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had this happen to me on one of the channels I have.

I had a channel that was just a fan channel for a musician I like. Inhad zero videos uploaded, but I had an absolutely enormous amount of time spent building meticuoously.xurated playlists for versions of each song and album (live versions, covers, etc.)

It was all just deleted and removed by Youtube randomly.

One step forward...

I'd about lost my lunch when Screen Culture started showing up on my phone's news slider. (I quickly turned off content from them, but to be forced to do that...)
