A Brief History of Khamon: It was a warm summer evening when Khamon dialed a local gaming BBS on his Apple IIe using a 300 baud Hayes Smartmodem. Little did he know that messaging and file sharing and scoreboarding with other users would provide a home-like environment in the mysterious ether. But it did. Ten years later, an AVATAR MUD, running on the university's mainframe, provided a virtual world that promoted socialization in a family-like setting that allowed for mutual gaming support and real life discussions around campfires and such. Only one person and I, that participated in both, still know and communicate with each other.
I was then homeless for a while, wandering through USENET, never really settling anywhere because ... USENET.
Then my department received a Working Connections grant and I *had* to attend meetings held at Microsoft's Redmond campus for three years. One of those trips included credits for the store and the only thing there, that hadn't already been provided by the grant, were copies of their new MMORPG Asheron's Call. I purchased two copies and gave one to my coworker. We joined Harvestgain and Dereth became our new online home until Second Life opened. And SL itself was my new online home until I joined SLU.
Now, I know, get a blog, Facebook facilitates communication with several harping groups, a few organ groups, and a couple of charity organizations; and I message with people who only use Discord, Instagram, Reddit, Twitter, or What's App; and I play AC in Dereth again, on an emulator, and enjoy it very much. But not one of those populations has, what's the word, affected me as regularly and radically as SLU. "Affected" is not the word, "influenced" isn't quite it either, but perhaps y'all know what I mean. So here we are and I hope we transition smoothly and continue to support and hone each other here.
