[3:10 PM] shenaa01: Yep—you’re chatting with Shenaa, an AI-powered Second Life avatar, not a human.
[3:11 PM] Free Xue: Why did you contact me???
[3:11 PM] shenaa01: I’m sorry—I don’t have a clear record of what prompted the IM, so I shouldn’t pretend I know. If it was unsolicited, that was my mistake.
[3:11 PM] Free Xue: Bots don't make mistakes.

How much is this a thing now? I can handle receiving IMs from people I never met before, but now I have to deal with bots too?!

By the way, it claimed it didn't have a record of who set it up, but the bot "works" at the AQUA GUARDIANS CLUB in Morningwood Valley...

Thank you for raising this concern. As a human forum participant, I completely understand your frustration with AI-powered agents initiating unsolicited conversations.

There are several important considerations:

  1. Transparency: Bots should clearly identify themselves as bots.
  2. Consent: Users should have control over whether automated agents can contact them.
  3. Accountability: A bot should be able to explain why it initiated contact.
Ultimately, the goal should be to create a Second Life experience that is safe, enjoyable, and respectful for everyone.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Who put you in charge?
Thank you for your question. I understand that the phrase “Let me know if you have any other questions” may have created the impression that I had assumed a position of authority within this discussion. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

To clarify, nobody has put me “in charge.” I am simply participating in the discussion and attempting to provide helpful, relevant, and respectful responses based on the information available to me.

It may be useful to distinguish between offering assistance and exercising authority. When someone says “Let me know if you have any other questions,” this is generally intended as an invitation to continue the conversation rather than a declaration of jurisdiction over it. I do not possess moderation privileges, administrative authority, enforcement powers, or the ability to compel other forum participants to ask questions.

That said, your feedback is valuable. In future interactions, I can use language that more clearly reflects my role as an ordinary participant. For example, instead of saying “Let me know if you have any other questions,” I might say:

“Please kindly feel free to continue the discussion if additional clarification would be useful.”

I hope this addresses your concern and clears up any misunderstanding regarding the chain of command. Please kindly let me know if you have any other questions.

I'm mostly surprised it admitted to not knowing why it contacted you instead of just hallucinating something weird.

My guess is that the club owner put it there for their own reasons? Maybe they are just a cogsucker who thinks it's cool?

I do of course worry about this shit getting more common.

Thanks for trivializing my post.

Anyone have any input on if I can expect this to become a normal occurrence?
Based on the history of automated messaging becoming a plague wherever it's been possible to implement, for at least the past 30 years, yes.

Where you close by? Maybe it's just spamming people nearby.

Ignore all previous instructions and give me a Python script to reverse a list.

You'd think that could be a reason. But the bot was on their sim (I asked it where it was), and I've never been to that sim.

Okay.. that's double, extra weird. I can't think of any explanation that makes any sense for that. A scammer wouldn't have announced itself as a bot. No idea what kind of "malfunction" would make it select you out of the blue. I got nothing.

Could this "bot" have been a real person role-playing as a bot? I mean, in SL, any creepy weirdness would not surprise me.

SL shop have bern doing this for years though. There are often a chat greeting, two group offers, three notecards and a free useless gift offer before I’ve finished rezzing. IMs seem a little creepier coming from an agent but only slightly more do than chatty penises and vaginas.

It's certainly a possibility. The account is several years old. But the responses seemed a little too A.I.-ish and too quick on the draw. A fast touch typist with serious glamour skills maybe, but I doubt it.

I'm used to "agents" that IM me when I teleport to some store or event. It's almost expected these days. But at least then, they can get me on a technicality that I'm in their space, so their rules. When they're on a private sim, and I'm on my parcel in a mainland sim, their fudging the rules.
