It's really pretty amazing how his audience can watch this without seeing it's just racist.. nothing deeper to it than that.
From what I understand of his shows, I would imagine his audience see that as a feature rather than a bug, though. They watch the show to be reassured that it's OK to be racist, which is pretty much the same reason they like Donald Trump -- he gives them permission to express themselves without any shame, so long as they continue to regard everything he says as revealed truth.

I don't know of course but it's hard for me to believe that Fox would've agreed to get rid of their golden goose as part of that settlement with Dominion. I think it's more likely Fox itself after the lawsuit tried to get Carlson to take it down a notch and he wouldn't agree to do that.

A Fox News representative had no other details on Carlson’s exit. People familiar with the situation who were not authorized to comment publicly said the decision to fire Carlson came straight from Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch.

Carlson’s exit is related to the discrimination lawsuit filed by Abby Grossberg, the producer fired by the network last month, the people said. Carlson’s senior executive producer Justin Wells has also been terminated, according to people familiar with the matter. A Fox News representative would not comment.

Murdoch is also said to be concerned over Carlson’s coverage of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, in which the host has promoted the conspiracy theory that it was provoked by government agents.

My guess is that Fox News is going to put their hosts on a tighter leash in the aftermath of the Dominion lawsuit, which didn't sit well with Carlson.

His show was too entwined with far-right extremists, including at Carlson's own media outlet, the Daily Caller. Cutting those ties would have ended him anyway.

From a 2022 interview with Nicholas Confessore, a NYT reporter who wrote an extensive series of articles about Carlson:
Well, we can tell you that in hundreds of episodes, they are borrowing themes and ideas from far-right sources. What we can also tell you is that when the show began, Fox had a big department called the Brain Room. It was the pride and joy of Roger Ailes. It was the fact-checking department. And these guys loved to go do research and fact-check stuff. And early on, you know, Tucker's producers would send stuff down to the Brain Room to check it out or get more information. And sometimes the Brain Room would say, you know what? That story actually comes from, like Stormfront, which is a neo-Nazi website. You shouldn't use that. But, of course, they kept doing it. And they stopped asking for help from the Brain Room because they weren't looking for facts. They weren't looking for correct information. They were looking for stories that would light up the audience.

I still feel like this is all too good to be true... I have no confidence he'll just vanish and stop spreading lies.
I'm sure he won't just vanish, but since it was clearly Fox's decision rather than his that they should part company, his next move won't be of his choosing.

I wonder about the suddenness of it all -- that Fox fired one of their biggest names so unexpectedly and without warning suggests something's badly amiss that we haven't yet heard about.

There are still some lawsuits ahead for Fox News. If I was them, I'd want my lawyers to vet Carlson's shows before I broadcast any of them.

He'll probably find himself some far-right billionaire sugardaddy who likes to collect Nazi memorabilia, like that Harlan Crow guy. Except his billionaire papa will also have some shady business connections to Russia.

Together they'll pump some money into Carlson's "Daily Caller" propaganda outlet and turn it more into a "Der Stürmer" lookalike, recruiting people from "Newsmax", "Breitbart", "Blaze Media", "Infowars", "Daily Wire" and so on.

If that doesn't blow in his face, he then might run for office as a presidential candidate in a few years.

Oh please let him do it now. I'd love to see Rump, DeSatan'sAss and *ucker *ar*son relentlessly stabbing each other in the back for months on end.

Watching republicans forced to choose between what kind of loud hateful rhetoric they want most... could be divisive enough to finally get them to turn on each other for a change, instead of all the rest of us.
