At least it stopped the leak.
That is from the National Mustard Museum in Middleton Wisconsin. They have some fascinating history there. Someone took a photo of a placard there. In the hope of sharing an obscure piece of American History, and because the photo is somewhat difficult to read I have transcribed it for you.![]()
EDIT: Don't recall what this one was, but it was removed so I slipped in a replacement...
THE STORY OF M
There is a story in the candy industry of what happened when the red M&M lost his 'M' at the gaming tables in Las Vegas. The red M's companion was the yellow M. The symbolism is obvious. The red M (ketchup) is vain and irresponsible while the yellow M (mustard) is trusting and resourceful.
But why was there ever a yellow M&M? We have discovered the amazing story.
The hellow M&M was originally a tribute to mustard, the favorite condiment of Scofman Mars, founder of the Mars Candy Company (The name 'Scofman' is German for 'Mustard Man'.) Scofman was the only son of Fluegelderton Mars, the owner of Germany's largest mustard factory.
Scofman Mars decided to make his fortune in America and tearfully left his mother and father in the early 1900's. He vowed to continue the family tradition by making great German mustard in America. But he met his heart's desire, the voluptuous Rotunda Sneakerfoot of Flatula Georgia. Rotunda had always dreamed of marrying a candy maker who could satisfy her insatiable sweet tooth. What would Scofman do?
The love for a beautiful woman won out over family and tradition. But in a fitting tribute to his family, the first coated chocolate Scofman would make was yellow, bearing the letter 'M' for 'Mustard' and 'mother'.
So when you chomp the delicious yellow M&M, do remember mustard and your mother and the romantic young man who gave us the sweetnesses of our youth.
