On the actor thing, it feels like, in general, a LOT of these streaming providers are leaning more into "less known/unknown" actors.

I imagine its cheaper.

I certainly don't know anything about the acting credits of almost all the actors in the series so far.

The Rings of Power Star Says Everyone Missed One Thing About The Stranger

"I don't know whether people have noticed, but the costume changes slightly over the course of the season. The fact that they were surrounding The Stranger meant that they subtly changed and altered themselves, It's like they all got pulled in, and so it goes from being a very big, wild costume to being more of a costume of an Istari."
So I guess that the color will determine which Istari he is. Looks like it'll be grey to me.

So there IS a season 2.

Coming on August 29. I don't think I would have missed it if they'd gone and canceled the whole thing. But I'll give an hour or so of my Saturday morning viewing time to at least the first few episodes, and see if they've righted this ship to any good degree.

Looks like the theme for season 2 will be more more more.

Sauron isn't doing human cosplay any longer. The Ents show up - any chance we'll see the Entwives? Looks like there's war between the elves and orcs. An adolescent Shelob makes an appearance. And that's Tom Bombadil in the hat.

It seems watchable. I may remember enough of the first season to not have to watch it again. Who am I kidding; not sitting through that again.

If anything maybe watch like, the last two episodes of S1 again maybe.

Half the action was there anyway.

I enjoyed this series, but also I have worked fairly hard to become the kind of nerd who doesn't get upset when adaptations are not 1:1 versions of the original. Because what would be the point, just experience the original.

That isn't to say adaptations can't go TOO off the rails. That's still a problem at times.

But in this sort of case, the whole, "This stuff was the same.era but thousands of years apart" I can just ignore and enjoy it. It just makes a better visual story.

If they followed the original timeline, most of the humans would die between episodes and get replaced. Which would be kind of funny showing the story from an Elf perspective.

Half of each episode is just Gil-Galad going to the current human leader and explaining, again, why something needs to be done, because the last person he explained it to died 3 generations ago.

My mind has always multiversed in the sense of appreciating differing versions of the same fictional world. Somehow my wood sprite brainpan is able to contain book, comic, movie, stage, and tv adaptations of a story while considering them all representing the same characters in the same wor'a'uld. Even virtually immortal elves are not immune to being arbitrarily created, renamed, or dropped altogether in any given retelling of a tale.

Yep.

Yes, doing the Second Age and keeping to the timeline wouldn't have worked on TV.

Half of each episode is just Gil-Galad going to the current human leader and explaining, again, why something needs to be done, because the last person he explained it to died 3 generations ago.
Not quite for the Numenoreans! They're the Kings of Men! Descendants of Elros Tar-Minyatur brother of Elrond himself.

Amazon Narration: "The Three rings were forged with Sauron forging the One Ring to Rule Them All and the Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die and Seven for the Dwarf Lords ....and what with one thing or another the War against Sauron didn't start for 93 years! Then it took 100 years and the Might of the Numenoreans to drive him out of Eriador....this was in 1700...about 1700 years BEFORE the time of Elendil Elf-friend and Queen Tar-Miriel. The Numenoreans pimp-slap Sauron a few more times, it's one reason he wants to destroy Gondor so much in the Third Age.....their leaders are descendants of the pimp-slapping badass Numenoreans. Aragorn in the LOTR films? Badass pimp-slapping Numenorean! Where is Numenor in the Third Age? That would be telling, and that tale is called The Akallabeth....no not the Lord British proto-Ultima game...he borrowed the name. This series is basically a condensed Akallabeth....but nobody except nerds has read the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales and can spoil everything. Join Amazon Prime and watch....we like money."

So I'm halfway through the first 3 episodes so far this season.

Slogging through it, as they say. Now I'm taking a breather.

I'm starting to think this is what it would be like to watch a novelization of a movie put to screen. That is, someone took a complete, unedited and uncut original script for a movie, wrote out a novel from it (sticking in lots of fiddly bits to pad things out to novel length), and now someone took that novel and turned it into a television series. Paragraph by paragraph. By paragraph. Except for the Rings of Power, there is no film, or script, or novelization, or anything it's based on beyond appendices from the books, and various writings and notes from Tolkien, and some hypothesizing from the production team, right?

I've been looking at the numbers. The LOTR movie trilogy totals about 10.5 hours. Based on 3, not very short books (or 6, depending on publisher, etc.), a lot of the books were not included in the films, story timelines and important elements were compressed or abbreviated, and so on. Meanwhile, Amazon claims the full 5 seasons of the Rings of Power will fill about 50 hours, roughly.

Nothing specific to say about these observations. But as I said, I'm slogging through it.

So I'm halfway through the first 3 episodes so far this season.
I binged through all 3 last night.

First, I want to say that having 3 *BRIGHT* and *LOUD* commercial interruptions per episode on a show that is generally so utterly relentlessly dark, gloomy and quiet... is f*@%(&#king offensive. F@%^&(@##k prime for 1) doing commercial interruptions at all 2) boosting them and 3) giving absolutely no regard to -when- they take place, what they interrupt and how it utterly destroys the continuity of the show.

F@%&#(k whoever was responsible for the decision and how it was implemented a dull rusty spoon.

"Hi, we're gonna spend millions on this show, then *SHIT* all over it with the same 4 ads you've seen over and over and over and over and over and...

/ahem. Sorry. /dusts shirt off and collects himself.

I'm torn. I'm curious enough about two of the sub-stories to put up with the two that I don't care about at all.

Modern TV's should dim the screen to 25%/33% brightness when [Muted]. Just so that our eyes don't have to re-adjust after BRIGHT LOUD ads are over.
