The attack of the BOM monsters?

Towards the end of the Skin Fair I happened to glance at Skin Addiction group chat. The conversation had apparently turned to praising appliers and complaining about BOM. One person was complaining about how awful it was to TP into a crowded area "with all those bakes on mesh monsters ".
I was about to log off , and didn't feel like wading into the discussion,
I've been wondering about it since, though. I can't figure how BOM bodies would look any more like monsters rezxing than applier ones, unless one were using a viewer that can't render BOM. Don't all the current viewers, including ones for slower computers, BOM capable?

Maybe BOM will be the next This Will Kill Second Life (tm)

Someone has their head up their arse and was just being an ignorant elitist. BOM is really just the old System Layer made to work with mesh. The only difference is that a proper implementation of BOM should have fewer scripts than an applier.

As far as graphical impact -- no real difference, it's still mesh body + mesh clothing = arseload of triangles all done up with 1024 textures!

Instead of rezzing into a room of grey ruths, now I can rez into a room of flying body parts!

Yeah, that's the way it's been for a while, since mesh bodies. I don't see the flying body parts as much since I upgraded my PC, but I see enough to know how they still look. The only way BOM would look more "monstrous" is if someone wore, say, the Slink Redux body without applying any layers at all.
That's why it puzzled me.

I do not know a lot of the technical SL stuff. I do know that it is far better in every conceivable way to render one 1024x1024 texture than to render ten+. It sound like you happened on a conversation between people who spoke of things they knew nothing about as if they did know something about them.

Just from seeing various bug discussions in passing, it does seem that Linden Lab has some serious issues to resolve as far as the functioning of the BOM servers, and that has a cascade of side effects. So it's not quite smooth yet.

Appliers deserve pliers. BOM is the balm!

So, on bodies that switched to completely BOM [Slink I know of, but others might as well] there is less geometry needed on the mesh[es] because an alpha layer can do the work of all the little cuts and multiple meshes], and its using a lot less to look good.

I don't think Maitreya switched to a fully bom body, I haven't looked at the belleza in a bit [don't go into SL much these days], and I think the only seperate meshes for the redux Slink doies are for feet, some torso morphing and butt mophing - for use with bom clothes.

Slink includes both the BOM body (Redux) and the applier version, you either erst one or the other. It's the same with the newest Lelutka heads, you get a classic version and the EvoX version, which is BOM.
I think Maitreya does it with layers, because the HUD has a BOM toggle, like most BOM-capable mesh heads still do AFAIK.

I didn't sit down and really work myself into using BOM until a month or so ago, but now I have it set up on several avatars including male and female Slink, Maitreya, at least 3 mesh heads.

BOM is so much better for everything than appliers. I can only assume this is some elitist thing, and possibly people feeling elitest because others are using "old clothes/skins" with BOM which are "ugly". Being able to use Alpha layers alone makes it way better than all the dumb little cuts on a crappy HUD that need to be endlessly toggled.

BOM is actually a texture, Maitreya applies the BOM texture instead of a skin with the button.

My (admittedly fuzzy) memory is that Maitreya issued the BOM-option-button version for now, as a stop-gap measure, while they worked on a more comprehensive overhaul of the Lara body. So at some point I expect a BOM Lara to be issued.

One thing I don't know about BOM and couldn't find out is the resolution of the final textures. For Ruth, it comes to 3 512x512 textures.

It really doesn't make a ton of sense to have a mesh body and then bake on the old system 512x512 clothes; it's a waste of the extra mesh geometry.

Max texture resolution is now 1024x1024. Pre-mesh system layers look a bit fuzzy these days.

Maitreya also did their BOM conversion in a smart way. The body is BOM, but if you want appliers, the old tattoo/underwear/clothing layers are provided as separate attachments. If you don't need the extra layers, they won't lag up everyone else's viewer. I wish all the other body makers had done this.

I think I may know the answer. BOM does not require any body or head alphas, whereas appliers did. Before the actual body would rez before, the old avatars would be still alphaed out - that's not the case with bom because there is no alpha. I do see the monster version of my av when I switch bodies until the body rezzes - it's because your mesh shape looks crazy on the old avs.

That's probably it, I expect.
I remember mesh avatars looking pretty weird rezzing before BOM, though. Giant heads and body parts floating all over,
Now that I have a faster PC with better graphics, it's just the orange smoke and then avs look normal, so I don't know if it's still like that for some people.

It's Second Life. LL could introduce a new feature tomorrow that doubled framerates and eliminated lag and someone would find a way to complain about it just because it was new.
How am I supposed to roleplay my disembodied body parts fetish if every avatar rezzes instantly??????
