The books download to the device with the app? or are they stored in an online library and read through the app? or am I totally misunderstanding how this works?

OIC they live in my Amazonian Kindle Library and I can read them on any device through the app, possibly even the Kindle web reader.

In most cases for Kindle offers (I don't know about those available through Apple Books), using the apps does force you to access the book online. And you do require an Amazon account* to do that.


* Which can be problematic for many, I get that.
