Well now it's over, so time for a resume: what to make about SNW?
At the moment it's the best new Trek series out of the real life acting bunch, period. It manages to present a new, friendly and relatable crew where we actually do know already much more about all members and are able to tell their names in contrary to Discovery with four seasons so far. It also does not hammer its message into you with a stick.
The cast is solid, effects are as well - it shows that contrary to old Trek this is not so much on the low budget side. Also for a first season of a new Trek series the average quality was already higher then with other Trek series, like TNG. And it's also fun to watch, it's quite entertaining.
There are also some strange quirks, like Pike's quiff which seems to grow from episode to episode to even more legendary proportions. Or these grill parties inside Pike's quarter, and then there's Sam Kirk who is Guy Fleegman in disguise, who really seems just to be some plucky kind of comic relief guy written into the series so that there's more fun element in it.
Anyway, it's good and solid but not brillant for me yet. The whole series feels to me like the producers and screenwriters are playing it still too safe taking no risks, because they want that the series appeals to many old hard core trekkies, which as consequence means that often the stories feel a little bit shallow. In almost every episode there's some unused potential, which was unused due to playing it too safe, and that's sad.
The series shows that the old Trek formula still workes in modern times. It's just not using it yet to its full potential. Still it's a much better and more relatable experience than Star Trek Disovery or Picard.
So it's like catching with with "The Orville", but still has some way to go before reaching the heights of Orville season 3.
