This might be a technical question. One of the many things I'd love to see in SL is animations that display love and affection. Poses that are built into furniture can be nice, but what has prevented the development of animations beyond that? For example, it would be nice to hug a friend or walk with a partner while holding hands. I've seen some, but they're woefully inadequate. Is it because of the lack of proportions?

Proportions but not just Height, also consider Skinny v/s Full figured, etc. & Is because of this. Unless you can rez a device that the avatars sit attach. Poseballs, a invisible walker vehicle, etc. All of which are 'really just furniture' You gotta kinda wing it with alignment.
You have seen that you have to manually turn to face the avatar using most Hug HUD things. You can even add RLV stuffs that will turn an avatar for you. Example being Hug animation players in something like OpenCollar. Both though are basically the same. Poseball less Animation players.

So long rambly answer short... To get it to 'mostly' work, Big expansive wide arm hugs and stuff, they give a better fudge factor to make it look 'right enough'.

I've wished for the same thing, but understand the difficulties. I have a good hugger, and have used gadgets that allow one to walk hand in hand, etc - but as Kathryn points out, the latter are really furniture. Gotta wing it.

Adding to what's already been said: arm and leg length. Most avatars have legs that are too long and arms that are too short, but the margin by which they're off from human proportion varies from a few inches, to several feet. Combine that with SL's avatar size issues and animating, or even just creating static poses, for multiple avatars is kind of a nightmare.

This is also why games like Fallout and Saints Row and others do not allow you to change your character height. Characters end up being mostly the same size so those animations can work.

If proportions were consistent and male avatars weren't all typically twice the size of the women around them it would be more possible to have these kinds of features you're describing, at least to the degree that the average SL user is willing to forgive things being slightly off.

And while body type is an issue too, as Kathryn points out, I'd suggest it's less about skinny vs. full figured than it is "inverted meat triangle" versus "HOLY #$%^ THIGHGAP".

Mister Empress and I will use a simple kiss hud for that sort of thing, and a follower for exploring. We like to use wildly nonhuman avatars at times. This results in kisses often ending in two people doing smooch animations facing opposite directions. Furthermore, some of the animations that exist for that sort of thing are either A) pornographic or B) disneyfied. So, given the choices, having a sense of humor about the finnicky nature of animations in SL is preferable to the nauseatingly perfect in either direction. I'd love development of more realistic hugs, kisses, selfies, and similar animations scripted for more realistic use then just inside furniture.

Technically it's hard to do. Some folks put in a LOT of effort to have what's available adjusted right for themselves and their partner. Unfortunately, if you're wanting something "right" enough to put in that effort you'll find that the quality of what you have to work with is sadly lacking.

What we need is for a genius-level animator to fall madly in love with a gifted scripter and then decide to put what they've made for each other on the market.
