Closed environment (game) vs open environment (virtual world). The two are not the same. Now if LL were to do something like the way it has always been in Active Worlds where you can host your world(s) [region(s)] on your own pc or rent server space either from AW or a 3rd party... that would be a different story.I wonder if there would be an uproar if the Lab got rid of ban lines on all main land.
I still think it would be great if they could just instance out a parcel with limited access. So someone can pass through it, just not interact with anything and not see the local avatars in the area.
In case anyone doesn't know what "Instancing" is, in MMOs, sometimes you enter an area that is different for certain players. Like maybe you enter a castle, with NPCs or a battle or something, then after some quests, the battle ends or the castle becomes a ruin. The castle would be "instanced". For players earlier in the story, they see a castle and a battle, for anyone later in the story, they see the ruin. The players on either side of this story, can't interact, in this region, though they may be able to interact elsewhere in the game.
Ban lines are just another issue with a clear, obvious solution, that LL refuses to solve. It creates lag and drama for nothing. Just stop rezzing the stupid ban line texture. The lines may have had a purpose decades ago, but on a grid where you can view property lines, it's pointless. It makes property owners use all kinds of rediculous lag generating scripts and collisions to remove undesirables from their property, when that kind of thing should be completely handled in the about land window, not by scripts and collisions. On expanding the Belisaria policy concerning Ban Lines to anywhere else - No, fuck off with that. It should not have been in place anywhere, at all. Let the Private Island companies dabble in that shit.
On instancing - Brought up to them in the past, discarded.
This just strikes me as weird. I mean, I am no LL fan boy, but laying the lab's failings at the feet of Bellissaria is bizarre. They are dealing with LL's mismanagement just like the rest of us. I recently got a house there, and the Bellissaria community groups are so welcoming and nice. I don't try to keep up with land baron politics or anything, but the Bellissarians are good people.Butthurt much? Damn egocentric worldview... everything is related to oneself there. I was talking on LL - everything they touch goes southways. This includes the new Linden Homes. Their whole community is seriosly f*ed up. Just go to the official Forum and raise a voice against anything LL does regarding those (like stupid road designs, auctioning off prime home locations at Fantasy Faire while the mainstay of Premium users had not managed to grab a single house at all or removing the right to use banlines on a whim only after people decided to sign up for Premium to get a new home) and instantly the LL cheerleaders of the inofficial Bellarisa community will gang up on you, because they love to be a Blockwart and hope for a recognition by their overlords. If you are part of those bootlickers I feel sorry for your existance. Get a life - even if just a second one!
They could work around the still occupied homes as well. Old and new mixed together.I think moving people would be a good idea, but only if they gave everybody a year notice, or maybe less, and base it on how far out your premium account is paid up. If you paid for premium for a year, you should not be moved out of your linden home until the year is up, unless you want to move. Of course, give people the option if moving early, but if they don't want to move, the expiration or renewal date of their premium acct seems like the right time to force migrate, if necissary.
They should give people who are force migrated priority access to their choice of linden home. Also, let them pick their new location when they are migrated, instead of throwing them into the linden home lottery, just to ease the pain a little, and thank them for keeping premium even though they were forced to move.
Do they have any physical servers any more? I thought they were completely in AWS. I haven't seen any non-AWS sims in a while.by restricting resource-intensive features on the newer servers and running the old servers with existing capabilities at a cheaper cost
It was a dark day when LL embraced security orbs, and I would by far prefer banlines. Even though both are security theater, at least banlines have rules.A whim? Banlines are a BLIGHT on the mainland. Every residential community I've been a part of in SL considers them a blight and they are banned in such communities.
We had a huge discussion about this on the old forums with a bunch of privacy options that could be credibly implemented in SL.I still think it would be great if they could just instance out a parcel with limited access. So someone can pass through it, just not interact with anything and not see the local avatars in the area.
No, they should let the *client* select how far away to rez it, because I'd make it visible from further away. AND have them show up on the minimap.Ban lines are just another issue with a clear, obvious solution, that LL refuses to solve. It creates lag and drama for nothing. Yeah, as annoying as Banlines are, I would much prefer hitting an invisible wall suddenly to "You have 1 second to move 500m and exit this land of be teleported home, oh wait, second is up, k bye now".It was a dark day when LL embraced security orbs, and I would by far prefer banlines. I like this, but I think some of the appeal of the new linden homes is the nice terraforming that the moles do. I think the old homes were pretty much flat square sims. Also, the region-wide land settings are different. For example, in Bellissaria, we can have skyboxes over 2000m, but we can't terraform. In my old linden home, we were not allowed to have skyboxes, but IIRC, I could terraform +-5m, which was nice for things like putting in a swimming pool. They could work around the still occupied homes as well. Old and new mixed together.
Just as happens in RL all the time.
Of course they need to start with sims that only have one or two tenants left.
The empty houses could be cleared and then filled with the new homes.
Then they ask the people in the old houses if they want one of the new ones on the sim. If they don't want to, they just stay in their homes.
A few old houses in a new neighborhoods. What is there so uncommon?
Totally agree. I'd like to see llTeleportAgentHome eliminated (especially from mainland). Don't mind being bounced out of a parcel but getting instantly TPed home without warning is just rude.It was a dark day when LL embraced security orbs, and I would by far prefer banlines. It could be replaced by 100% damage scripts, so the heart symbol would warn you when you crossed the border into an asshole's parcel.Totally agree. The only saving grace of experiences is that you have to consent to them for them to work on you. Or are there ones that work differently? It could be replaced by 100% damage scripts, so the heart symbol would warn you when you crossed the border into an asshole's parcel.
On the other hand, llTeleportAgent within the same sim with a timeout is basically safe and should be allowed for all landowners without being tied into the horrid "experience" system.
Even that could result in you finding yourself at home within a fraction of a second. Most security orbs I've encountered give a reasonable time to get away but I could be an arsehole and make a script which gave no warning and TPed / Ejected someone within a fraction of a second of entering my parcel. It could be replaced by 100% damage scripts, so the heart symbol would warn you when you crossed the border into an asshole's parcel.
