Society of St. Pius X excommunicated by Pope Leo over schism

A group of traditionalists directly defied Pope Leo XIV by ordaining four new bishops without his consent, calling it their "sacred duty" during a ritual-laden ceremony at the society's seminary in the Swiss village of Écône.

The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) had received repeated warnings from the Vatican that the ordinations would constitute a schismatic act and trigger the automatic excommunication of all bishops involved. On Thursday, the Vatican went further than expected, declaring that the four new bishops, the two bishops who consecrated them, all priests of the SSPX and all lay Catholics who "adhere formally" to the group were now in schism and excommunicated.

Groups like this always want to hit the undo button and go back to the way things were before WW2 because that's when they or their predecessors made indefensible decisions, sided with the wrong side of history and discredited themselves. So they'd rather turn back time and pretend these things never happened.

In the gaming world, that's called "save scumming".

They hooked onto support for the Tridentine (Latin) mass, which was at the time familar and loved by.many "cradle Catholics," (like my late father, for example), even if, like my father, they'd long lost their faith and turned against the church precisely because of the kind of far-right numpties who support the SSPX.

And with the far right and trad types getting in it's become more important for the Pope to lay down some rules / guidelines before they take over (or try to).

The pope just used one of the ancient rules in the Roman Catholic Church to excommunicate this group. The SSPX should appreciate it that the Pope stood so firm by this rule that only he can appoint new bishops in the Roman Catholic Church.
Strange that the SSPX is so modern at that point, when they thinnk it is in their favor.

It is in their favor financially because they can now raise and budget funds as an independent organization with no interference or over site from the church.
