Former FBI director and special counsel Robert Mueller has died

Mueller, who oversaw the probe into the Trump 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia, was 81. Trump responded: “Good, I’m glad he’s dead.”

Robert Mueller, the former FBI director for more than a decade who later served as special counsel in the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, died on Friday, according to two people familiar with the matter. He was 81.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but Mueller had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for years, the people said.

Mueller, whose two-year probe concluded in 2019 that Russia had interfered in the 2016 election of Donald Trump, served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013. The Justice Department in 2017 appointed him special counsel to oversee the growing investigation after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.

Upon hearing of Mueller’s death on Saturday, the president wrote in a Truth Social post: “Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Mueller ended up as the longest serving director of the FBI since J. Edgar Hoover because Obama kept him on for a few years longer then the normal term of service for that position. And Mueller had been appointed by George W. Bush. It's obvious Obama respected and trusted him.

I always had the impression Mueller cared a lot about following the law like a robot and I mean that as a compliment. I think people like him make a lot of politicians very uncomfortable and for good reason. We probably won't have anybody like that in high office for a long time and that makes me sad.

Robert Mueller was one of the last well-dressed men in Washington. Soft shouldered suits with white button-down collar and foulard ties. Wore his watch on the underside of his wrist, as a holdover from his military training. One of the last to carry that classic American look.
