When we were doing Mars mission studies, back in the '90's, we tried three year old MRE's to see if they were palatable, because that's about how long the round-trip mission would be. Not exactly gourmet, but perfectly edible. Huntsville, AL has a NASA center in the middle of an Army base, because when NASA was created in 1958, rather than moving the test stands and such, they just drew a line and said "this part of the base now belongs to NASA". So it was easy to find some MRE's at the local surplus store.
