As we know, we're all free to look how we want in SL but when the herd instinct drives fashion trends like huge hips and tiny waists, or in the case of males, huge shoulders and biceps, that leaves 'normal' avatars looking like the odd ones out.

Creating a realistic shape is not easy for everyone, even with a system avatar. There must be quite a few avatars that are the result of the owner's lack of perception of scale and proportion. For instance a lot of avatars, both female and male, have their heads too small, while a lot of female ones have arms that are much too short with microscopic hands. Neither of these are likely to be fashion trends as such.

I'm thinking that these two panels are something all those tech journalists talking about the metaverse really need to see.

Not strictly a fashion trend but I've noticed several skins where the face is lighter than the body. I don't mean because of face-lights or because the head skin is mismatched with the body, but where the skin texture on the face is actually made lighter as a highlight, so it looks like pale make-up

In my experience, most RL people's faces are either the same shade as their body or a bit darker due to more exposure to sunlight - and that goes for any skin colour.

Anyone ever release a skin or a tattoo of peeling skin from a sun burn?

It's not uncommon to see avatars showing off marks caused by spanking, self-harm or other forms of abuse. Not my cup of tea at all.

However, my twin sister Willow did acquire an appendix scar a few years ago after a notorious SL celebrity chef used her as a guinea pig for his latest creation - a vegetable burger seasoned with iron filings.

Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of those in the event galleries. It's disturbing. I don't know much about BDSM myself, not being into it, but the marks I've been seeing look more straight -up violence than sex play. There are battle wounds, too, but they're different.

SL avatars with disproportionately long legs also tend to have disproportionately short arms, too.
That could be accidental though because if someone decided their legs or hips need to be a bit longer they might not realise the arms don't automatically become longer to match.

I've seen a few female bodybuilder avs walking around. There are several bodybuilder avs on the MP, so I guess what I saw is what happens with those shapes when the sliders are maxed out.
The thing is, bodybuilders do get that way in RL (takes a lot more than sliders, lol, but I've seen pics) so it's still realistic, I guess.

I think this comes from RL inspiration from 'influencer' makeup looks, which in addition to the bronzing and highlighting they use a concealer under their eyes which is like 5 times lighter than their foundation shade.

It is also quite a popular trick (over the top highlights) that has been used by drag queens for decades.
