I had very low expectations for both Book of Boba Fett and Peacemaker. I wasn't going to watch either of them at all.

Then I had a molar taken out, and then they told me all about dry sockets... so I'm going on 4 days since my last cigarette. I never tried to quit before, and I started smoking when I was 14, and I'm 43, so... my brain is doing weird shit. Somehow, watching bad shows makes quitting smoking easier. Like, hating stuff takes my mind off it.

Also, Boba Fett and Peacemaker are both 3 episodes in, exactly. Peacemaker dropped with 3 episodes, so it's obvious HBO Max and Disney+ want to have some kind of dick waiving contest with these spinoffs nobody asked for. So who wins in this head to head contest of overproduced bad ideas?

Boba Fett was just bad. It's Jon Favreau, so I'm not even going to attempt to critique the story, because Favrequ's stories always fall apart. I will absolutely critique everything else, though. They have the slowest, most boring city chase scene I've ever seen in mos esper. I could do better than that with tricycles. The color palette, like the plot, is too toyetic. The colors are off everywhere, but just to focus on one thing... look at these two Boba Fetts. One is from Return of the Jedi, the other is from the Book of Boba Fett (try to ignore the scrawny Gamroeans). The lighting might be a bit different between the two shots, but even with the lighting and color grading differences, you can clearly see that Boba Fett now has some kind of stupid looking motley on his boots, the colors are all too bright in the new outfit, the armor is too small, he's wearing some kind of black dress shirt and slacks under the armor, and why the hell is the armor less damaged after the sarlacc pit than before it? I've seen a lot of cosplay that's better than what Disney put out. I expect better from them.

So Boba Fett was about what I expected.

Peacemaker was a surprise! I actually really like it. (note: There are post credit scenes in every episode)

My thing with Suicide Squad is when I was a kid, Suicide Squad was the only thing DC made that I liked... other than the occasional mini-series, like Lobo or something. So the Will Smith Suicide Squad was a huge letdown for me. The new Suicide Squad was acceptable, but still kinda meh. Also, I never liked John Cena. Even in the WWE, he annoyed me. His matches showed no imagination or skill. He just wove the flag around and acted like a douche while everybody else put him over. Then he openly came out as the CCP's bitch. Plus, he never really showed acting ability.

Peacemaker is kind of the first thing James Gunn has done with lots of creative freedom, since Disney black balled him for off color jokes on twitter, from over a decade ago. His jokes were in bad taste, but I mean... dude came up through Troma, what do you expect? He did the new Suicide Squad, but I don't think he was really free to do what he wants with that, because he was kind of just helping the studio apologize for the Will Smith Suicide Squad fuck up. With Peacemaker, Gunn took a bit character he invented in his new Suicide Squad and fleshed him out, and it really, really works.

Start with the opening sequence, which is like a 30 second long tik tok dance sequence. It's hilarious. The characters are funny, and relatable. I actually like John Cena in this. I'm surprised to learn he actually can act. Aesthetically, the over the top superhero costumes in the DC universe seem to fit James Gunn's style better than Marvel superhero costumes ever could. Also, I really like that Gunn plays with political correctness a bit. He doesn't run from his problems, he explores them. Making Peacemaker's father a KKK leader is super interesting to me. I think most white people have at least one living member of their family that is a really bad racist, and we don't usually know how to handle it well. Hell, most of white privilege really boils down to shit our families did, that we don't want to acknowledge, which is why racists love 23 and me, and hate doing real genealogy. Maybe Gunn has something interesting to say about that.

If all you are interested in is new stuff, I think it's better to have an HBO Max subscription than a Disney+ subscription this week.

Watched The Eternals last night.

It's not awful but it wasn't super great. It just felt like it was just kind of, a thing that was there.

Also and spoilers I guess.

They need to combine their powers to beat the big monster inside Earth and there is an evil Cthulhu monster that has been absorbing their powers, and becoming more sentient/sympathetic.

And it really felt like those two plot lines would combine. But it didn't, it just went nowhere. Like basically they discover the monsters they have fought for thousands of years are the same as they are, and basically just want the freedom to be themselves in the end.

Then they just kill the monster.

I was kind of stoked for the idea of the monster man becoming the hero.

I haven't watched this show; but Wikipedia says his original armor gets stolen at the beginning of the first episode, so I presume the stuff he's shown wearing later is different and essentially new.

There were a couple of episodes of The Mandalorian that cover what happened to the armor. Fett ends up getting the original armor back but the promo images show it has been fixed and repainted.

It's not Thor 2. I thought it was a serviceable introduction to the characters that didn't embarrass itself. Not the worst Marvel movie but in the bottom third at best.

When Cobb Vanth is wearing Boba Fett's armor in the season 2 episode "The Mashal" of The Mandalorian, you can see the armor has gone through some shit since we last saw it.

Then, when Djarin returns the armor to Fett, Fett fixes it up and repaints it.

Finally, the black robe Fett now wears under it is the one the Tusken Raider tribe he was with gave to him.

Things change when Time gets its hands on it.

Or, Amazon for some time has been releasing new shows with the first 2-3 episodes on the first day of release, and 1 per week after that.

Wheel of Time was handled the same way. Not sure who they were waving their dick at with that one.

Oh yeah, I forgot he fixed it up a bit when he got it back. Also, yeah, they do explain the black under the armor, even if the explaination was silly, and the black under the armor doesn't look much like tuskan rags at all. It looks more like a black dress shirt from the gap. It also doesn't explain why the armor doesn't fit like it used to. He can't have put on that much weight. How did Boba Fett get fat in the sarlac pit, and slaving away for Tuskan raiders in the desert? Maybe off camera, he ran across a Taco Bell in the sarlac pit? Nah, I don't think so. It's more likely that bespar shrinks in the sarlac spin cycle, LOL

Probably just their viewer habits AI algorithm is telling them if you can get people to watch the first several episodes, they will tend to watch the whole season and get hooked on the show.

Wait, this was something of an introduction? I didn't pay enough attention to the many many different characters to be able to tell them apart by the end. Well, other than Superman & Athena (don't say the A). And the Bollywood actor. And the tech guy. And the guy with the magic hammer hands. And glowie-eye-mind-control dick. And the emo child. And . . .. Okay, um, I just don't care enough about any of them and/or want to see any separately starring in solo films.

The Celestial's have a weird reproductive process.

That was the biggest weakness to me. With all of the characters in the movie, it could only introduce the team and the individual members were more a collection of traits than distinct personalities.

The betrayal at the end didn't feel effective because we never saw anything between Ikarus and Sersi that made them seen to be in love or even minimally invested in each other. Fewer characters with more screen time for their stories would have been more effective.

They do a good job of making it clear this is not Batman in a mummy superhero costume. Comes off pretty freaky.

I say, son, I say I read Moon Roach in Cerebus before I ever saw Moon Knight, so I expect him to be talking like Foghorn Leghorn. Senator Claghorn, that is.

I can agree with this. I really wanted to like it, because I like Chloe Zhao, and I hate the Chinese Communist Party. It seems like a film that was made by people who love being in meetings, though. You know, the same kind of people who thought ending Game of Thrones with a series of meetings was a good idea. I hate to compare Eternals to Game of Thrones, but when a film stars Robb Stark and John Snow, and your female lead is Sirci, with an S instead of a C, they're pretty much inviting comparisons, and the comparisons probably won't be flattering.

I get the feeling that there's more going on under the hood that I can't access, though. Like, I think Zhao has messages for the Chinese people. I know China has banned Eternals, but I don't think that banning Eternals in China means nobody will see Eternals. It just means that nobody will pay Disney to see The Eternals. The Chinese people will still pirate it.

These things look like they might be coded messages, but I don't know enough about China to know if they are or not, let alone even begin to decode them:

The Eternals and Deviants curate planets full of intelligent life in order to generate the conditions necessary to birth a new Celestial (reference to one child policy?)
The Eternals and Deviants were both lied to about their origins and purpose (Zhao has been black balled in China for saying the culture is full of government lies).
The birth of a new celestial is a greater good that maybe Eternals should be willing to sacrifice people for? (possible reference to CCP's Uhigar genocide?)

That reminds me though.

Uh... More spoilers...

That fight against Ikarus, was a way better Justice League vs Superman fight than the one in the Justice League movie. You have Wonder Woman, you have The Flash, you have Batman pulling some basic ass tech Deus Ex solution out of his ass and actually ending the fight.

End of the day, I am more excited for John Snow being The Black Knight than I am for Eternals 2.

It also made me appreciate the power level of the Guardians of the Galaxy a bit more, since they actually killed a Celetial in combat, and not just aborted it before it was active.

I've reached the conclusion that Daniel Radcliff can convincingly play any part any place any time.

Um, what?

Jason Mantzoukas is voicing Tommy Lee's penis in Hulu's Pam & Tommy
When Hulu’s series Pam & Tommy about Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee was announced, people were fixated on whether Lily James and Sebastian Stan could accurately embody one of rock’s most iconic former couples. But nobody bothered to ask who’d play Tommy Lee’s penis.

There are so many wild details about Lee’s life—including how he basically had a Starbucks in his home—that it’s easy to forget that the Mötley Crue drummer had his member co-narrate his 2005 memoir, Tommyland. The Pam & Tommy showrunners decided to add that into the series, and they found the perfect voice for Lee’s dick: Jason Mantzoukas.

LOL, that reminds me of when they had to get a stunt double to play Willem Dafoe's penis, because Dafoe is so well hung it made a serious scene too funny in the movie Antichrist. I wonder about how the guy with the stunt cock handles that role on his resume. Does he brag about being a big movie star's stunt cock? Eventually, they will find out that you're not the big stunt cock, you're the average-sized stunt cock, chosen for how incredibly average you are.
