I just learned there's a 5-member a cappella group from Texas called Pentatonix. They released a Christmas album (who hasn't?!), which sounds fine I guess, if you like that sort of thing (in a cappella...), but that's not what I want to talk about.

They're called Pentatonix, which pretty much means... 5 combinations of things? That sounds like some real thinking there.

I just found out the other day that Alburqurque, by Weird Al, is a parody of Dick's Automotive, by the Rugburns. It's a super fucked up song. Weird Al actually made Dick's Automotive more normal.

EDIT: Found a better video on the "topic," especially since it's an orchestra of youts.

Kid Rock is doing it again. It was funny a month ago, but now it's just kinda lame. I think he's doing this to see how long he can go with stuff like this before the long tail thins out too much for it to be financially viable.

One cool thing about this... in every online conversation I see, people are noting that he's the son of wealthy car dealership owners. I don't think people are purely hating on him for growing up rich, though. I think the subtext is that he came from a family of slimy, corrupt assholes, because only slimy, corrupt assholes run car dealerships in America. If you look at the shady markups at car dealerships lately, I think that stance is valid. If not for Citizens United, dealerships would be maybe a few opinion polls away from being legislated out of existence.

This came across my Twitter TL yesterday, retweeted with the comment "Who's this dick?"

Read the other replies, too.
Of course, the guy's probably just shit-stirring and orange-ass-kissing. He's getting what he wanted either way.

Does anybody else get the feeling that the classic rock cutoff date shifted since the pandemic began? Like, in the before times, classic rock pretty much ended when Power Salad said it did, and didn't budge much: July 14, 1987. I think Tom Petty's agent signed a deal with the devil to allow him to make classic rock until he died, but everybody else in the world was bound by the cutoff date. I've notice that now, the classic rock stations are playing 90s stuff, and muzak in stores and restaurants is full of songs from Nirvana, and newer stuff I associate with Guitar Hero. Is 90s music finally classic rock? When we say oldies do we now mean 80s music?

At this point, 90s music is over 20 years old at least, and the audience for 60s-70s music is not a growing demographic.

I was just reading some scathing contemporary reviews of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, and I was thinking, why didn't the Beatles ever play the Superbowl? Did they play the Superbowl? IDK, so I looked it up. They didn't. Here's the list of Superbowl halftime performers...

What's shocking to me here is how long the show was played by marching bands. They weren't even professional marching bands. Most of them were college bands, but there were also high school marching bands. The last high school marching band played in 1987 (unless you count 2012, when Madonna used a high school marching band as a backdrop). Disney did produce a few shows over the years, with mousekateers and songs from their movies, but no real rock stars. There were a few rock stars here and there, like Doc Severnstein in 1970, and Ella Fitzgerald in 1972. I love Doc and Ella, but nobody remembers them for kicking the door open to pop music taking over the show. There were a few weird performers, like George Burns in 1987, and an Elvis impersonator named Elvis Presto in 1989. I wish the show was still weird like that.

It looks like New Kids on the Block were the first recognizable rock stars to play the superbowl, in 1991. They played with some no name acts, but after them, there was no halftime show without a rock star. The following year, Gloria Estefan played, and after her Michael Jackson just took over the show. After Michael Jackson, you don't play the superbowl unless you have an A list agent. So New Kids got the ball rolling, and then I think Michael Jackson changed the show permanently.

I guess this belongs here, batter Cardi B is a rapper, yes?

I'm not sure, but I think they were piling on her because of this:

Points for her concern for the people affected, but I hope she realizes that world leaders kind of have to worry about invasions if other world leaders are doing them...

The Ukranians love the Turkish Bayraktor drones so much, they made a song about it. This is the first song I know of that praises drones.

This is the second song I know of about drones, though. The other one I know is a song by Dos Gringos, who are F-16 pilots, so they sang about how much they hate Predators, LOL

Okean Elzy is a popular Ukrainan band. I heard an interview with the lead singer, Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, who described this one last impromptu public appearance they made before it became impossible. Now, he said, he is busy helping people get out of the war zone and getting supplies in (his celebrity helps with that), and making inspirational videos.

I have no idea what any of the lyrics mean, but it's a very moving performance.
