Jail time for conversion practices remains a half-measure, given Stürmer's anti-trans madness. Worse, it can be weaponised against gender-affirming therapies.

That was my first thought when reading about this. It seems to be a (possibly) well-meaning action that could backfire horribly. It makes me wonder about the actual motives behind it.
If you're responding the piece about banning conversion practices that I posted, successive governments have been agonising for years to find a way of doing it that doesn't risk legislative overkill and conflicts with our ECHR obligations. According to the article,

Two new criminal offences will be created under the plans: one for carrying out conversion practices "which cause serious harm, alarm or distress", and another for encouraging or assisting such practices to take place outside of England and Wales.
The test of causing serious harm, alarm or distress seems to me a good safeguard. Better, to my mind, pass the law and let the courts sort out what the boundaries are than not to legislate at all. That's what appeal courts are good at.

It occurs to me now how much Tony Blair looks like a Poundland King Charles.
Speaking of which, one would expect the "Labour" :)rolleyes:) Party to have the decency and common sense to distance itself from the "legacy" of this war criminal. The Israeli-controlled Keir Stürmer and his unaccountable, untransparent about the bribes they've been getting, cadre decided otherwise - worse still, they doubled down on their smear campaigns against their opponents. I hope the Greens crush them all - Stürmer, Farage, and the Tories.

Call me cynic but until we burn the country and the political grifters to the ground nothing is going to change, so...

I don't really understand what Farage is up to (maybe Innula can enlighten me). Am I right in thinking that he is forcing a by-election in the hope of winning it and thus proving that he still has sufficient influence with voters? If true, that seems like a very dangerous tactic (personally I hope he fails!), even though he originally won the seat with a good majority.

He's certainly trying to take control of the narrative, a remarkably Trumpian gesture, but it seems to be backfiring. All the other main parties, including the far-right Restore, other than the Greens have said they won't contest the election. Initially the Greens have said they will, but that was before everyone else stood down, leaving us with the delightful prospect of a head-to-head between Farage and Count Binface, which the latter might well win.

Even assuming Farage does win, that will achieve little for him since it won't stop the various investigations into his failure to declare funding from questionable sources, which could well lead to a recall petition and a further by-election in which the other parties will certainly stand.

It might mean he doesn't have to declare some of the more recent donations to his slush fund -- I don't know, but I've seen it suggested -- but that's a narrow, technical point.
