I am flying tomorrow to Evian in France with the prime minister for what will be the most surreal summit of world leaders of his - and my - career. And that is because Keir Starmer’s tenure as prime minister is conditional on whether Andy Burnham becomes a Labour MP on Friday and then how fast...

I'm no particular fan of Keir Starmer, and if there's a leadership contest between him and Andy Burnham that gets as far as a vote by Labour Party members I'll vote for Burnham on the basis that, while I don't know much about him, he seems popular as Mayor of Manchester and he can't do a much worse job as PM than has Starmer (though I'd rather vote for Angela Rayner if I get the chance).
However, I very much doubt that, whoever wins, it's going to make a great deal of difference since so many problems people want the government to solve are either beyond the government's control -- HMG can't control world energy prices, or the international bond market, for example -- and even more domestic issues that the government can do something about can't generally be fixed within the life of a single parliament.
But it all seems very odd that the whole thing hangs on the outcome of a single bye-election in Makerfield this coming Thursday.
