Ending Support for Project Zero – and What’s Next

"Project Zero" is coming to an end this Friday, so it's back to using the viewer on your desktop PC if you want to log into Second Life. Or you can use the mobile viewer*.

Not surprising other than how quick. The post said something along the lines of "Use up your credit before than." But then I noticed the date and was like, "oh wow, thats like right now."

Can't blame the immediacy on the end of the fiscal quarter.

Frankly, I can't say I'm surprised.

As much as PZero was likely effective in helping onboard new users and make SL more accessible, recent market trends (primarily in the cost of computing hardware its' impacts on HPC hosting that this stuff requires) and the overall state of the economy has made it so that PZero is just as much a non-starter as it was years ago in previous, usually co-operative, out-of-house projects, whose names evade me at the moment. (but the name Gamefly comes to mind but I doubt has relation.)

Something has to be done about the barrier to entry to SL, be it hardware or UX. I'm not a doomsayer like say, Coffea (who I am friends with) over at r/SL, but I can at least say that in the long term the direction we're going in terms of user retention, be it new or old is not sustainable.

That being said, maybe Linden Lab could pursue adding support for Firestorm or the Official SL viewer to NVIDIA's streaming service? Probably the best shot we have for something like that if we piggyback off of a greater platform.
