I'd honestly like to have some varying opinions on this site. It makes it a bit more interesting than us all just agreeing with each other on most things! I

I was recently called a "tankie," which apparently is now a Democrat / centrist insult for anyone to the left of Fetterman (or whatever passes for the "mainstream" Democrat these days).

I'm not American anyway, so whatevs, but it's been instructive and "interesting" (i.e., horrifying) watching the Dems shoot themselves in the foot, the crotch, the arm, and whatever other part they can reach, by isolating and stigmatizing those who, in theory, should be their allies. The party under Harris has marched to the right on just about every issue other than reproductive rights, and is utterly intolerant of anyone from the left who won't jump on the bandwagon.

The whole Chappell Roan thing was a case in point: she was dragged through the mud by hundreds of Democrats who were outraged because, despite admitting she'd be voting for Harris, she had serious reservations. She used the term "critical thinking" something like 4 times in her last video on the subject of politics, a quality that appears to be very much out of fashion in the US right now.

If Harris loses in November (and I'm increasingly thinking that is likely), I think that demonizing important parts of their own natural constituency (including Arab Americans in places like Michigan) is going to have played an important role.
Isn't the problem, though, that confronting fascists means that left-wing anti-fascists usually have to hold their noses and vote for a far more right-wing candidate than they'd prefer? I mean, were I French I'd of course vote for Macron in preference to LePen, though I don't much like his politics.

Oh god. Who the hell knows. 2009? 2010?

I don't have an easy answer for this. I have occasionally voted strategically, supporting the local Liberal candidate in order to ensure that the Conservative didn't win. Fortunately, where I am the two front running parties tend to be Liberal and NDP (i.e., the quasi-socialist party), so it's generally an easy choice.

I think it depends on what's at stake and the context of one's own particular riding -- or, in the US because of the Electoral College, one's state.

My point with regard to the Chappell Roan example I gave is that one can vote "strategically," and more to the right than one would prefer, but still agitate for progressive action and policies. Roan admitted she was voting Harris -- but that she was unhappy about it. And she was much crapped upon for daring to critique Harris' positions on LGBTQ+ issues and Gaza -- if you're not full-throated in your endorsement (as Taylor Swift was) and you are "influential," you're going to be seen as "the enemy" merely because you've expressed doubts.

I want to see more people, and not even just progressives, "expressing doubts."

I'd honestly like to have some varying opinions on this site. It makes it a bit more interesting than us all just agreeing with each other on most things! I was disappointed when Billie totally refused to explain her views and insisted on just being a troll.
And I have some News from Hell.

Billijo IMed me in-world today about her banning here.

To be clear, we are not "friends," and I disagree vehemently with pretty much everything she stands for, but she's decided (because of interactions on the SL forums) that I'm "nice." So she uses one of those log-in tracking things to see when I'm on, and occasionally IMs me. For some reason, when she was banned from the SL forums, she contacted me for advice on her appeal. Maybe she thought I had an in with the mods? No idea.

ANYHOO . . .

She says that she deliberately provoked the banning because she felt completely outnumbered here, or something to that effect. And that she'd have "lost respect" for Cris if he hadn't banned her.

So there you are, Cristiano -- you've still got BJ's respect! Yay you!! :birthdayballoons:

Billie’s entire motivation was micro dopamine hits from being the eternal victor in all things.
BJ is, in addition to being a MAGA fascist, also a very old-fashioned troll. In-world, she verges on being a griefer.

She likes to "disrupt."

Maybe if she learned to be more strategic about it...

I've occasionally thought of putting on my not-conservative-but-speaks-conservative hat with a new Avi and play RINO (Republican In Name Only (you know, like most of the party was 30 or 40 years ago), but ... with Trump. No. And I'd probably get found out anyways. I'd still be too damn liberal but could float a few causes.

It probably wouldn't work anyways since my arguments would be reality-focused, which Republicans have abandoned and left the Democrats to have to step up and take as their own: such as anti-Communism, anti-Totalitarianism, free markets, etc.

lol, MAGA in a nutshell. "I'll do what I want to whom I want." And still fishing for narcissistic validation. Pathetic, BJ, pathetic.
