The era of the “ten blue links” is officially over.

At its Google I/O conference on Tuesday, Google unveiled an AI-powered overhaul of Search centered around a reimagined “intelligent search box” — what the company describes as the biggest change to this entry point to the web since the search box debuted more than 25 years ago.
Instead of returning a simple list of links, Google Search will drop users into AI-powered interactive experiences at times. Google is also introducing tools that can dispatch “information agents” to gather information on a user’s behalf, along with tools that let users build personalized mini apps tailored to their needs.

I really wonder what the hell they are thinking with this. I get that most companies are interested in AI to replace workers, but I can't see how on Earth anyone would think this was a great idea.

Look.

We spent a hojillion bazillion dollars on AI and it sucks but we have a God Complex so lets ignore this and everyone will use this digital life we created if they want to or not.

Google's intent is to own all of the information in the world and make its chatbot eventually the only portal by which you can access any of it. With no list of search results at all anymore, even SEO is completely moot - the only way to get your site any visibility will be to pay Google to allow its chatbot mention it to people who ask the right question.

Yeah... this occurred to me as a potential goal. ...but seems hard to achieve in reality. I might actually switch to BING now or something.

That reminds me when I was on AOL back in, um, can't recall. Early '90s. Possibly 1990. I remember logging in and seeing stuff like a news section an entertainment section. Etc. I kept wondering 'how the heck do I get to the actual world-wide-web and out of this AOL enclosed box?' Then I found a Mormon chatroom and spent hours teasing Mormons.

Ah, the years that don't exist, because, really, I can't be that old, right?

Oh, and no, they did not convince me to join the Mormons.

So, Google wants AOL box.

More like "it can't control."

All this AI push is just a way to get everyone on board with lies.

For what it's worth, now that Google is no longer an actual search engine, website administrators have literally-literally no incentive whatsoever anymore to not block Google's spider and any of their other bots. They all have no other function except to steal content and training fodder for the slop machine now.
