I was braced for the worst, but I loved this episode. It was everything I wanted from the final chapter, but didn't think they could deliver after the very uneven writing throughout Season 8, and after last weeks' episode which I thought was among the worst of the entire run.

Not a big fan of Bran, never have been, but Tyrion talked me into it. Also, I think so much of my dislike of the character comes from what I perceive to be the less than stellar talents of the actor. They cast these roles with children, and lucked out with the actors for Sansa and Arya. Bran... not so much. He never found a way to make me care what became of him. There was nothing under the wooden face of the Three-eyed Raven.

To my delight, the episode was packed with great character moments and a sense of closure, and I'm a happy camper.

I have no problems with Jon's fate. He joined the Night Watch, after all, when this all began. He took a long detour and now he's back home. I think the North will suit him.

He was left a tragic figure, and now he's finally earned the doleful expression he's been wearing for 8 years.

I'm pretty much OK with most of it. Jon didn't want it and going back beyond the Wall suits him better than most other ways of disposing of him. No surprise that Sansa took her own path, and I think we may see Arya in a "What's West of Westeros?" spin-off pretty soon. The other might be GRRM's last book "Fire and Blood" (which is set 300 years before the GoT era).

I think GRRM has actually finished the last two books, and we'll get to read the parts that many can't fathom as part and parcel of his characters. I'm pretty sure when the series took off for HBO, they came to a deal with Martin not to release/publish the last two and spoil the ending of the series before they were finished. They would have been simply "best sellers" in 2014. Now, they'll make even more money for the franchise.

One thing there will definitely be in the books which was not present in the series, save for a few dreams, is Bran's internal narrative/POV. I suspect this will help.

I really didn't think sending Jon to the Wall was meant to be a punishment, or that Bran intended for him to stay there. It was Bran giving him the opportunity to live a life amongst friends without worrying about anyone trying to capitalize on his bloodline or start another war in his name. And Bran had to have had a word with Tormund before he left Winterfell, else why would the wildlings still have been at Castle Black?

A human might have deduced that Jon was the murderer, but it's a stretch for an animal to make that connection and dragons obviously aren't too bright. "Hard shiny thing bit mommy..... look, lots of hard shiny things over there!.... KILL THEM!!!"

After episodes three, four and five, that was better than it had any right to be and was a fair bit better than I was expecting. I freely admit, after episode five I'd all but given up on a decent end and went searching on /r/freefolk for spoilers. As such, I was expecting, well dreading, most of the basic plot beats. Somehow they managed to make things that read stupid on paper (Bran becoming king, Drogon carrying off his mum's corpse) make some kind of sense. Even the bit where Sam tries to convince the assembled Highlords to try democracy didn't come off nearly as cringeworthy as it did as a bullet point of spoilers.

Overall a decent episode. It was never fully going to make up for the shitshow of the last few seasons, but it at least managed to end things respectfully.

This is actually a rumor that has GRRM very pissed off. He keeps ranting about it on his blog. He insists it is not yet written, though he also says he is home and working on it now. Perhaps this last crappy season will inspire him.

I never considered it that way, but you could be right.

My thoughts went the opposite way, that the dragons are smarter than we are. He understood mommy’s obsession with this stupid piece of iron is what ultimately killed her so he wanted to destroy it and the chance for it to do the same to anyone else.

Of course I’m projecting the symbolism of it as intent, reptilian intent at that, but I like the story better with this explanation
