Molly Russell appeared to copy language of self-loathing from Instagram posts about suicide in notes found after her death, an inquest has been told.

The 14-year-old “binged” on 2,100 suicide, self-harm and depressive posts and 138 videos, many of which were shown to North London coroner’s court in Barnet. She took her own life in November 2017.

In a heated exchange yesterday about allowing children on to the site, Oliver Sanders, KC, the family’s lawyer, shouted at a senior Meta executive: “Why on earth are you doing this?” He described videos and posts as “disgusting” and “dreadful” and said some simulated and promoted suicide, in breach of the policies of Meta, which owns Instagram.

Here we go again.

Wall Street Journal: Meta is planning significant layoffs
Facebook-parent Meta is planning the first significant layoffs in its history as the company grapples with a shrinking business and fears of a looming recession, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The job cuts are expected to impact thousands of workers and could begin as early as this week, the Journal reported over the weekend, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. Meta has a headcount of more than 87,000, according to a September SEC filing.

Meta has been fined 1.2 billion Euro by the Irish data protection officer for a data leak. On top of that all data of EU customers should be hosted again in the EU only, so needs to be transferred back from the USA to the EU.

Meta wants to engage in a legal battle to fight this decision.

The writer describes the actions of facebook as retaliation over the new law. No, they just evaluated whether it is worth paying this tax and decided it wasn't. The whole idea of this law seems misguided since facebook was driving traffic to the news sites. Also I have read that all of the money goes to big news organizations, not small publishers.

Whatever the background, I find it difficult to imagine being on Meta's side in any argument about whether they're being asked to pay too much tax.

Meta is preparing to charge EU users a $14 monthly subscription fee to access Instagram on their phones unless they allow the company to use their personal information for targeted ads.

The US tech giant will also charge $17 for Facebook and Instagram together for use on desktop, said two people with direct knowledge of the plans, which are likely to be rolled out in coming weeks.

The move comes after discussions with regulators in the bloc who have been seeking to curb the way big tech companies profit from the data they get from their users for free, which would be a direct attack on the way groups such as Meta and Google generate their profits.

I'm looking forward to the fallout.

Facebook has introduced to select English users in Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram their generative AI to create stickers. What could possibly go wrong...

'I blew the whistle on Meta, now I won't work again'
Arturo Béjar, who is testifying in front of the US Congress on Tuesday, said he thinks whistleblowing means he will never work in the industry again.

He worked for Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, between 2009 and 2015, and again from 2019 to 2021.

Meta said it had brought in "over 30 tools" to support a safe environment for teens online.
Mr Béjar said that part of his job was working to help better protect people online. He thought that things were going in the right direction before he left the company in 2015. However, he first realised that there was a problem with it - when he saw his daughter's experience of Instagram.

Speaking to the BBC in an exclusive UK interview, he said "shortly after she went on Instagram, she started getting unwanted sexual advances - misogyny, harassment at 14."

A SERIES OF advertisements dehumanizing and calling for violence against Palestinians, intended to test Facebook’s content moderation standards, were all approved by the social network, according to materials shared with The Intercept.

The submitted ads, in both Hebrew and Arabic, included flagrant violations of policies for Facebook and its parent company Meta. Some contained violent content directly calling for the murder of Palestinian civilians, like ads demanding a “holocaust for the Palestinians” and to wipe out “Gazan women and children and the elderly.” Other posts, like those describing kids from Gaza as “future terrorists” and a reference to “Arab pigs,” contained dehumanizing language.
“The approval of these ads is just the latest in a series of Meta’s failures towards the Palestinian people,” Nadim Nashif, founder of the Palestinian social media research and advocacy group 7amleh, which submitted the test ads, told The Intercept. “Throughout this crisis, we have seen a continued pattern of Meta’s clear bias and discrimination against Palestinians.”
