I just discovered this delightful channel of a dude making stuff:
I really enjoyed that video. I remember from my time in manufacturing that a lot of real world production is still done on old fashioned lathes from the 1940's. It's mostly just electric motors and better steels that separates them from the original. Fancier, computer aided systems still aren't universally used.A small video about the history of lathes and their impact on the world:
When I hear about people like Jacques de Vaucanson, it really irks me how their names are largely unknown today, even though a lot of our modern world is based on their contributions.
Or take stories about teams of doctors and nurses who work 12-hour-shifts to pull kids back from the brink of death after they got into an accident, only to hear those kids' parents praise Jesus afterwards.
It just seems so ungrateful.
I know this is going to offend some people, but I honestly think that our churches should be dedicated to names like Jacques de Vaucanson, Marie Curie or Louis Pasteur instead of a guy who's main accomplishment was to get nailed to a cross, if he even existed.
Something about watching complicated stuff being machined...I found out about him when he made some parts for the new Wintergatan marble machine.
I find stuff like this quite relaxing and also appreciate the humor.
