Here in Louisiana, earlier this afternoon it was reported that we were up to 6 presumptive positive cases. The governor is on TV right now saying that the number is now 13, and he's declaring an emergency for the state.

3 of the cases are at a nursing home/assisted living facility in New Orleans. I hope there's no repeat of the Seattle situation there. :(

Of course a lot is totally uncertain about the virus. I just reproduced what my doctors take on the matter was.

So on a practical level: I would not rely on the fact that grandpa and grandma can rarely be infected by their grandchildren.
I don't know how the situation is on German schools, but here there are a lot of elder/old teachers too.
But that is okay then, because they are no relatives?
(No offence meant, just a theoretical retorical question)

It is just all very complicated.

It's Spring Training here. Everyone's coming from all over, congregating in stadiums, then going back to where they came from.

Right now I feel lucky not to be a SportsBall fan.

Hello Sid

I have spoken of grandparents in the context that is being discussed to close schools across the country. Then there would be a question of who would look after the children... and in many families one would think of grandparents.

Of course, the virus does not care if the child is related to the elderly. Unfortunately it probably affects all elderly people, whether related or not.
oh, man, it just occurred to me that it affects you a lot. that's total crap. i'm so sorry about that.
maybe Beepo can tell you the source where she read it

I'm reading upwards of 10-12 articles a day, so unless I remember to post it here, I'll never retrace the specific citation. Something I read just today, however, was discussing how children are not being hit with life-threatening symptoms, but they're getting sick and they're little germ bags, which puts the adults around them at risk of infection and older adults at risk of serious illness.

On the other hand, I read another article by a doctor who says humans need social contact for their emotional health and that they will die of loneliness if we promote social isolation. Personally, I think he's a dangerous drama llama. Disclaimer: I'm not all that fond of people. Social isolation doesn't bother me at all as long as I've got the internet and I'll take my chances with isolating, tyvm.

I'm not scared or worried at all. I ignore the complete flood of information that is out there every day.
I stick to the resources, that I consider trustworthy. And that's it.

And besides that:
I like the Queen song: Who Wants To Live Forever? :)

concerning the question of age of the teachers:

My knowledge is that from the age of 50 the risk increases slightly, but then it increases much more strongly from around 65.

That was specifically what has been criticised about the dutch advice, because information is not up to date with the research. People show no symptoms up to five days after contact and can be infectious without symptoms at all. Some people shed virus without falling ill for a much longer time, although most will fall ill eventually. Children are still getting it and there are children in hospital in Italy, so while it generally doesn't affect children as badly as older adults, it isn't true that they don't get it/don't shed virus/aren't badly affected... they can be.

There's a lot of misinfomation about the contamination of surfaces and the length of time it is still viable on surfaces and whether or not it is airborne too... the Chinese and Koreans have done a lot of testing, so it is inexcusable that the media and especially the health information systems are spreading wrong information still.

You ever see Sleep Dealer? It's a movie about Mexicans telecommuting into robots in America, to do construction and warehouse work, while American airmen telecommute to Mexico in attack drones to kill terrorists, kinda. Great movie. It really explores how that kind of tech disconnects us, but connects us at the same time. I digress...

Your post just made me think about that movie. I wonder if companies will start developing high quality drone telecommuting after corona, or after a similar pandemic. Why bother with vaporware AI when you can have a real human controlling the robot, from the safety of their own home?
I have not seen it but it sounds interesting.

There is a lot of various tools out there but no one of them is comprehensive. So you wind up having to find solutions. Even to not assuming everyone has internet access at home.

I don't think this means anything is changing automatically -- rather, it's stepping up the preparations for the time when emergency measures will need to be introduced, such as agreeing the emergency legislation (which will already have been drafted for any type of epidemic) with the Opposition and scheduling the votes, and that kind of thing.

Check the sources, and stick to the really trustworthy ones.
That is my strategy,.
And Youtube, where every wannabee with a smartphone, tripod and some video editing equipment can post his/her 'expertise', is not one of them.
Same goes for Twitter, Facebook and the like.

I simply have no reason to distrust the Dutch authorities who are in charge over here.
It is totally clear they have good protocols for this situation and so far they are doing a good job.
Of course they will make mistakes here and there, a lot is uncertain, they are no Gods either.
But I refuse to worry more than is needed, because of social media 'experts' and cheesy newsites like the Daily Mail, The Sun, De Telegraaf, Bild"zeitung", who only want to generate more clicks with this hot topic.

Current trend seems to be youtube is actually demonitizing all videos regarding the pandemic. Hopefully that will put a stop to most of the hey I just read wiki and made this video crowd. Yes I know it seems like a form of censorship but false information can lead to deadly results.

The idiot! We are just as much as a hub for travel to the US from Asia, Europe and Africa as any of the other large airports in Europe. We’re not immune from a pandemic.
It's a whole lot of "closing the barn door after the cow ran away" after the cruise ship fiasco anyways.

I think his handlers convinced him he had to be seen "doing a thing."
