On the east coast of the us the earliest it was on anyone's radar was when the first cases appeared on the west coast. Companys started dusting off their contingency plans but most individuals did not view it as something that might affect them until the middle of the month. My company was doing two half ppl in and half ppl home on the 12th and 13th and it was a surprise when they announced on the afternoon of the 12th everyone would be home as of the 16th.

Also the date of this thread is jan 23. Somebody should have sent a link to all those officials who didn’t know anything til mid March.

Finally I have vindication for always going to straight to worst case scenario first. I had us locked down fast and early. Family rolled eyes: “ Don’t you think you are going overboard again (Like you do with everything)?”

Reminds me of when my family was so critical I had “become addicted to a video game”. They sure changed their tune on that too.

I've always been a little paranoid I guess and my family teases me relentlessly about it (including my husband). One of the things I do (probably because I used to live in Northern BC and we had blizzards) is to have a months worth of canned and dried goods on hand. Also, I'm always learning how to do something; garden, bake my own bread, ground my flour, extract sweetener from stevia, make my own soap, make my own wine etc. etc.

My brother used to phone and ask me if I'd started building my still yet. The thing is, he married a woman who does the same thing I do. So now that all the supermarkets in San Diego are barren, his wife has enough to keep them going for a few months at least and she also is growing a prolific garden and has planted many fruit and nut trees. He's not teasing either of us quite so much as he used to.

Also my brother was career military and now he's working as a civy for the Navy so he knows how scary this virus is. He's really taking it seriously and I am so glad for that.

That might explain some of it however the store I shopped in was in a quite affluent area for miles. They had none either.

Once people began to notice, it would also motivate the hoarding we've seen.

I am guessing part of it is limiting how often people go out. It might be interesting afterward to compare how much was bought to how much would have been bought anyway over the same time period.

The loss of life in Wuhan is tragic and politically embarrassing to the Chinese government. Nevertheless, for the rest of the world, the reports of large numbers of urns in Wuhan being collected by families is significant in another way. People are lining up to receive urns. That was not possible during the lock down.

That change in behavior is evidence of a change in the trend of illness there.

With politicians still waffling over social distancing (Sweden is very bad), it is important to emphasize that social distancing works. In that respect, the trend in deaths there is more important than the number of deaths.

Saw a drone video of Milan's empty plazas and streets here (FWIW from a subsidiary of RT). That should be our focus as the face of CoViD-19, but I expect that the media will go for morbid stories--as I have myself. That's a mistake. We need to focus on constructive action and not hopelessness.
