The crazy car bomb talk is unfortunately attached to the crazy biography talk.

Isabel Allende has a new book, Violeta, coming out on the 25th. The Guardian did an interview with her.

Here is an amusing excerpt.

Your recent marriage is your third. Did you expect that?
Do you think that anybody expects to marry at 77? No! But then this man heard me on the radio and fell in love with me. The only reason we got married is because for him it was really important. The last straw was when his granddaughter, who was seven years old at the time, went to the librarian at school and said “Have you heard of Isabel Allende?” And the librarian said: “Yes, yes, I’ve read some of her books.” There was a pause, and then Anna said: “She’s sleeping with my grandfather.”

When I lived in Salem, MA there was this bookstore in the downtown area that was about 16 times worse than this (nothing as tall as though), with piles of books in front of books in front of books, several feet high. One time when I went in as the clerk was picking up from an obvious customer-caused cave-in, I asked how often it happened. The clerk said between 10-15 times a day. I wondered if it happened so often, why did they put out the books that way and the clerk said "What else would I have to do all day long?"

I suspect the clerk was the owner, but I never asked.

My Kindle just let me know that The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli is trending!

Apparently we have slipped back to the 16th century.

Library porn (and lots of it)

When I was a kid, things weren't so terrific at home (violent, alcoholic father). The library was the place that I went to for safety. It was refuge for my soul, my mind and my body. I'm not sure I would have survived without it.

My Sister-in-law got me reading the entire series of Lucinda Riley's "Seven Sisters". Normally I don't read stuff like this but I like the historical research that she has done on every book and enjoy the different geographic regions she writes about. The stories aren't too drippy romantically either, so that's a plus. I'm on the sixth one now, "The Sun Sister". Her style of writing reminds me of James Michener, with a lot of historical description. Sometimes I'm in the mood for that.

I've always been iffy about those top blah blah list of books you should read to prove you're a real reader lists. At least of the ones where some of the books on it I've already read, I often think "I could have lived just fine not having read them."
