I have some fondness for Pinterest, especially back in the day (let's say circa 2012), but all that's dead now.

Pinterest, the web's de facto mood board, has long been one of the best places for finding and sharing aspirational lifestyle imagery: sumptuous meals, beautiful art and interiors, fashion and beauty inspiration, and an endless list of do-it-yourself home and holiday projects.

Or at least it was. These days, the site is engulfed in a torrent of uncanny AI-generated slop, drowning out the real, human-made content that once thrived there.

Slop is everywhere on Pinterest, frequently ranking in the top results for common searches. It persists across classic Pinterest categories like home inspiration and DIY hacks, fashion, beauty, food and recipes, art, architecture, and more — and often links back to AI-powered content farming sites that masquerade as helpful blogs, using Pinterest as a tool to draw in viewers to useless chum content just to cash in on lucrative display ads.

Pinterest users are frustrated, saying the AI onslaught is making the platform less useful and harder to navigate. But SEO spammers powering Pinterest's slopageddon say they're raking in cash.

As long as the rakes are clogged with money, I guess there's no problem with clogging the internet with AI.

Google has been promoting an AI slop-filled "science" site titled Science Magazine — which publishes bizarre, error-ridden articles alongside fantastical AI-generated images of nonexistent spacecraft and other oddities — in coveted positions in Google results, including top positions in its News tab and "Top Stories" feature.

A new clause, published this week on the company's website, outlines that Pinterest will use its patrons' "information to train, develop and improve our technology such as our machine learning models, regardless of when Pins were posted." In other words, it seems that any piece of content, published at any point in the social media site's long history — it's been around since 2010 — is subject to being fed into an AI model.

I've recently been playing with a few erotic "AI" image "creation" websites. However, not so I can rub one off. The intent behind my pornographic-ish efforts are loftier than that...

I've long harbored an interest in the subversive arts, and though I'm not really claiming to be attempting exactly that per se with what I'm, uhh, creating, I figured what better way to subvert the use of an obscene 'artistic' tool by producing primarily clothed, decent imagery with it. (This is usually why I don't do hobbies!)

Anyhow, one of my first efforts was to reproduce the painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer. After only a few abortive attempts (the first showed far too much shoulder, and the second I mistakenly prompted for a nun's habit), this was the result:

I was surprised by how close this rendition adheres to the original work. I'm going to keep playing at this...

I hate how much I am enjoying messing with this because I also hate the whole, unethical issues underpinning Ai and AI "art".

I uploaded a different picture and asked it to update the outfit on the first (above) image.


Then I just asked for a fantasy ranger outfit with some details.


I've been doing this sort of thing a bunch. Start with an image, get it changed and changed and it's neat watching it evolve the same base image.

One path was to make an action figure, then pose it some, then turn it back to a "realistic person".

For some reason, I got a sort of... Dwarf person back.

My first go through on converting my SL self to AI took 2 days and leaves me wanting to push stuff off the table. Anyway, here was my first try:

It's not bad but older in appearance than I expected. I suspect the white hair is throwing off ChatGPT. So I asked it to make the image more youthful.

Pretty good, but really white. So I asked to make it more Hispanic in facial features and skin color.

Oy, the hair! Asking for it to be white again put me on the waiting list since Sunday. This morning I finally got:
