The first episode of British scifi cult classic show "Doctor Who" was aired on 23/11/1963, so it is by now 60 years old. The show was targeted at children at the time, but should also teach them something. And its premiere episode didn't go well, because at the day before Kennedy was murdered, so the shows' producer battled for it and was able to convince the BBC to air the pilot episode a 2nd time. The rest is history.
Since the budget was pretty much limited, the BBC also wanted to reuse as much of existing scene stuff as possible. This is why the TARDIS looks like a British Police Box. By the way nowadays not the British Police, but BBC has the image rights on the police box.
Of course, there are also some special episodes to celebrate it, where David Tennant is also making a comeback. It is older than Star Trek, where the first episode ever aired at 08/09/1966. And it holds the world record as longest running scifi show ever.
