Yes. I have seen ads online attacking Dr Acton that never get around to mentioning his name. She is most identified with Ohio's anti-covid measures which were pretty effective until Republicans in the state Legislature overturned our (Republican) Governor's actions.

Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has lost his House primary in Tennessee, becoming the second Trump-endorsed candidate to be defeated this week.

Former Tennessee agricultural commissioner Charlie Hatcher defeated the two-term congressman in Thursday's Republican contest for the state's 5th congressional district.

Hours before polls closed, US President Donald Trump said Ogles had his "complete and total endorsement for re-election".

I've heard he pretty much sat on his hands during this election, relying on Trump's endorsement to get him the votes.

It's just increasingly **Everything That Isn't MAGA**.

And that's a terrible organizing principle. There's no single center to rally around, so everyone keeps hearing about things that matter intensely to somebody else but maybe not particularly to them. The result looks rudderless, fragmented, and perpetually distracted. That's not exactly a recipe for enthusiasm, showing up and writing campaign donations.

Meanwhile, what Democrats are promising the people with really deep pockets is More regulation, more scrutiny, higher taxes, and less political power. Good luck getting *their* enthusiastic financial support.

And that's where massive income inequality starts feeding back into the political system. As wealth concentrates, the middle class shrinks, and more people scrape by in an increasingly precarious gig economy, ordinary voters become less able to financially counterbalance billionaires, corporations, PACs, and lobbyists.

It's no wonder "the left" is such a freaking mess.

Mike Lindell refuses to concede in Minnesota primary despite getting far fewer votes

Mike Lindell, the pillow salesman, Trump supporter and election denier, has refused to concede defeat in Minnesota’s Republican gubernatorial primary, despite trailing by a double-digit margin the morning after polls closed.

The Associated Press called the race for Lisa Demuth, the Minnesota House speaker, late on Tuesday night.

With almost all votes counted, Demuth was more than 45,000 votes ahead of Lindell, who had the backing of Donald Trump, beating him by 43.4% to 32.5%.

David Crowley defeats democratic socialist Francesca Hong in Wisconsin governor primary

Establishment-backed David Crowley narrowly defeated democratic socialist Francesca Hong in the Wisconsin governor’s primary early Wednesday morning, a major win for party leaders after a messy race defined by questions of electability and growing voter angst.

Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, had mounted a last-ditch effort with retiring Gov. Tony Evers to paint Hong as too extreme and, therefore, unelectable in a battleground state that President Donald Trump won by just shy of 30,000 votes in 2024.

And it marks a wild reversal in the race. Crowley had suspended his campaign in early July only to jump back in a few weeks later shortly after Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez was forced to leave the race amid a campaign finance scandal. Former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes dropped his own bid in late July.

About a month back or so, Hong was up over 20 points. The last leg of the race got her mired in a number of minor scandals, about things like a social media post of hers saying we should cancel Thanksgiving. I don't think the news of a credit card suing her for $30,000 in unpaid debt helped. She made more than her share of newbie political mistakes, though a lot of the "establishment" will use her loss to push against other DSA candidates.

This is nothing new, though. That has always been a defining characteristic of the left, it has always been a coalition of vastly different groups of people with interests that don't necessarily overlap.

Take labor rights advocates, for example. They're generally in favour of economic growth and often in conflict with the environmentalists. Teachers and academics are often quite disconnected from blue collar workers. Liberal religious people who are in support of social programs may clash with feminists who prioritise reproductive freedom.

If you imagine society as a circular pie and divide it into "political Left" and "political Right", then you don't actually get a pie divided into left and right halves. Rather, "the Right" is located in the center of the pie that is occupied by the conservative establishment and its allies while "the Left" is distributed alongside the outer crust like an annulus.

That also explains the siege mentality of the conservative mindset, btw.

I agree strongly. The "left" is bigger than the right in the USA and clearly is. ....but there is a serious problem. The right is like 90-95% united behind Trump. Meanwhile, the "left" has always been very divided and got a lot more divided over Israel/Palestine. I think the right could exploit this a lot more than they do. ...part of why they don't is because they often project that the left is just like them, but wrong.
