I watched it twice through while Netflix was in the "red envelope", at least until their library got whittled down to zero copies of specific keystone episode discs.
Even back then, the special effects were off putting, dated and cheesy. Seems like with modern editing tools (even without generative AI) they could refresh the look and feel of at least that alpha textured cone they used as a wormhole. Maybe make the ships look a little less plastic. I dunno. The story certainly holds up, and a lot of the acting did too.
The original effects were on hard drives that were destroyed. So they don't have masters.
The show was filmed in widescreen but broadcast in 3:4 format. They knew the standard was about to change so they planned to be able to reformat the show. But without the effects discs it was not possible to render at higher resolution.
For the DVD release, they used the widescreen film and blew up and cropped the effects shots to fill a wide format. The result made the effects look worse.
The BluRay release reverted to 3:4 format with sidebars. The effects were minimally retouched. The result is a much better looking version closer to the original broadcast, but with much better sound.
eta: It looks like the YouTube version is from the newer BluRay remaster but limited toy YouTube quality. Still beats the DVD version.
