YouTube is trying to make AI music deals with major record labels

After debuting a generative AI feature last year that produces music in the style of famous artists like Charli XCX, John Legend, and T-Pain, YouTube is now asking major record labels to allow it to clone more musicians. According to the Financial Times, the Google-owned video platform is offering to pay Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records “lump sums of cash” in exchange for licensing their songs to legally train its AI music tools.

YouTube told the Financial Times that it’s not looking to expand Dream Track — which was supported by just ten artists during its test phase — but confirmed it was “in conversations with labels about other experiments.” The platform is aiming to license music from “dozens” of artists according to the report, which will instead be used to train new AI tools that YouTube is planning to launch later this year. The fee that YouTube is willing to pay for these licenses hasn’t been disclosed, but the report says these will likely be one-off payments rather than royalty-based arrangements.

Per reporting by 404 Media, Spotify is populating the profiles of long-dead artists with new AI-generated songs that have nothing to do with the deceased musicians — without the permission of their families or record labels.

The outlet uncovered, for instance, that American singer-songwriter Blaze Foley — who was tragically shot to death in 1989 — had "released" a new song called "Together" on his Spotify.

The new single featured the sounds of a male country singer, electric guitar, and piano, in what 404 called a "new, slow country song." The art uploaded alongside the song was an AI-generated image of a young singer with spiky long hair and a black leather jacket — nothing like the actual outlaw country singer.

"I can clearly tell you that this song is not Blaze, not anywhere near Blaze’s style, at all," said Craig McDonald, owner of the record label that manages Foley's catalogue. McDonald's wife originally alerted him to the new release, which has since been removed.

Saw a video of some guys cracking up deliberately trying to make terrible AI music, and decided to take a crack at it myself. Udio is pretty awful, but Suno AI turned out kinda nifty.

The lyrics are like 70% mine, I wasn't taking the attempt seriously so I made the mistake of not proofreading after I told ChatGPT to clean up the rhyme/meter and add a little extra more in the same style/theme. (like "as lull" instead of "and full"),

I'm freemium, Sono AI's subscription rate is kinda steep for what would be entirely casual use, and even it wasn't, I'm too paranoid to set up payment info. tl;dr: Ran out of credits on the first attempt and couldn't revise/repair.

Could be better, but I'm impressed and enjoying what came out of basically 5 minutes of goofing around!!
