From Wa Poost:

“A neighborhood in Austin, as the nation’s coronavirus case count ticks into the thousands: There’s an hour-long wait for a table at 9 p.m., parking’s a bear, and the sidewalks teem with cuddling couples and loud groups of young partyers.”

All over this country people are reveling in Spring break. I remember being young but not this stupid or selfish.

Our Amazon guy knocks on the door and is already in his truck and peeling out of the driveway by the time I get off the couch and walk the five feet to the front door. I want to know how Amazon managed to perfect teleportation.
They stole the technology from UPS, that's how anything UPS got delivered, even well before Teh Virus.

Mask-resale gouging ban goes into force | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

Japan's ban on the price-gouging resale of face masks came into force on Sunday. Tokyo took the measure as masks have been in short supply amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Violators will face penalties of up to one year in prison or a fine as high as about 9,500 dollars.

The legislation bans the resale of masks by individuals and companies at prices higher than the cost of buying them at retailers or elsewhere. The measure applies to sales on online auctions as well.

I’ve had a compromised immune system for most of my life. I‘m not sure if this will help anyone, but here’s now I’ve always dealt with this. I keep a small table beside the front door. When I’m expecting a delivery, I notify the delivery person that the front door is unlocked and to please leave the items on the table. If they require a signature, I leave a note of acknowledgement on the table. This works in 99% of cases.
The delivery guys have all been told not to go inside and not to get within 6 feet of a customer.

People over 70 will soon be asked to self-isolate themselves for up to four months to protect themselves from the risk of contracting coronavirus, the UK health secretary, Matt Hancock, has confirmed.
Four months! Long time to self-isolate.

Glad I'm a stripling of 64 (65 in May).

I have no idea how this is supposed to work in practice for some people. My cleaner, Ywona, has two children, one aged 10 and one only a couple of years old. Her mother came over from Poland to live with them when the youngest child was born, partly to help with childcare and partly because her health isn't too good, and Ywona and her husband can keep an eye on Mum.

How they're going to manage self-isolation is a mystery -- she can't keep to her room and avoid contact with the children for 4 months, after all, so I guess she won't.

It must be a horrible position for them all to be in, knowing that one of the family is very likely going to infect Grandma with a disease that, because of her age and poor health, may well kill her.

No good idea! The elderly already tend to self isolate temselves without government advise... At least hand them one of those emergency buzzers each and instruct them how to use them. When I dabbled in training as a paramedic long times ago we had enough of those cases that might have had another 5 to 10 lucky years of living if they had not self isolated and passed away miserably without anyone noticing.

My advice: better hand the elderly pitchforks and torches and give them a free bus ride to the health secretary's office instead.

PS: The more I read about official reactions to the outbreak, the less I can condemn the increase of physical threats to politicians, sorry lads and lasses in politics - violence is still the wrong solution but you really can't claim it came unprovoked anymore.

It's not the Health Secretary's office you should be heading for; it's the offices of the chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, and the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance.

They're the ones providing the advice on which the government is acting, as part of a pandemic preparedness strategy drawn up in 2011 and kept under review since (the last major revision was in 2017): Pandemic flu

I'm taking a similar attitude to the one I took when I was told I had throat cancer -- my best chance of survival was to assume the medical specialists helping me knew what they were doing.

This report in The Guardian provides a survey of the arguments

"The prominent German media outlet reported, citing unnamed sources, that US President Donald Trump was offering large sums of money to German scientists working on a vaccine. He wanted to secure exclusive rights to their work, the newspaper reported.

Trump was doing everything he could to secure a vaccine for the United States, "but only for the US," the newspaper quoted an anonymous German government source as saying."

As I posted earlier, our 70 and over people were told to self-isolate yesterday. This morning on the news, in a retirement home, we could see some of the reactions from a few. There were those agreeing that it was the prudent thing to do, but also those who said that it was ridiculous as they may be 83, etc. but they were in excellent health, obviously not understanding that even if they didn’t get sick, they could pass it on.

I can understand how difficult it will be for them. Most don’t spend their time on the internet, they will hopefully be made to understand by those working in these “homes”. One very old gentleman seemed really sad/disappointed/angry. “No bingo? No hockey? No visits? What are we supposed to do?”

For some, I'm sure they realize they don’t have too many years left. This must be a scary time for them.

They should have taken the money, after councel with the German government...
There are good chances the rights for exclusiveness would be null and void in accordance to German law.

What the actual fuck?! If this is true, I don’t even know what to say. I have no words.

If such a thing as limiting a vaccine to one country was even possible - this puts Trump and his high-ranking enablers on a level with any mass murderer in history.

Bearing in mind who's offering the money, unless he was offering cash up front, the offer's worthless.

Keep in mind: he is an idiot and a conman, when those two traits are in conflict he almost always goes for the idiot route.
He’s looking for opportunities to be a savior for his base. This thing is a religion, but the media is too polite to call it that.

The Isis terrorist group is steering clear of Europe because of the coronavirus. Having previously urged its supporters to attack European cities, the group is now advising members to “stay away from the land of the epidemic” in case they become infected.

I just looked. It seems to have been the infamous Bild published by Springer Verlag... that's a tabloid, no serious newspaper. They are known to make up things all day long - almost as much as the Trumpster.

EDIT: Forum messed up quotes - switched it back
